Vikings Cruise

The Spartanburg Vikings advanced to round 2 of the 5A playoffs with a 42-28 win over Clover at Gibbs Stadium Friday Night. The Vikings will travel to Laurens Friday November 25th, kickoff at 7:30.

Spartanburg and Clover were locked in an interesting back and forth battle until a Garrett Miller pass bounced off a Clover WR and into the hands of Viking CB BJ Roseburgh, his 5th INT in 5 games. On the next play Vikings QB William Yex hit Damyjai Foster for a 40 yard TD pass to give Spartanburg a 28-14 lead, and the Vikings never looked back.

Below are my thoughts on the Round 1 win:

  • William Yex…holy smokes. Wow. 21-26 for 409 yards and 5 TDs to 5 different WRs. He has become the center point of the offense. It’s so evident how much the coaches trust him now. What a performance in his first playoff start.
  • Connor Shuggart – it wasn’t a great night for the defense giving up over 300 yards rushing, but Clover had no run plays that broke for long runs or a long score. Connor Shuggart had 14 tackles and kept Clover from having any quick drives.
  • Romain Kelly and Damyjai Foster are going to be in Clover’s minds for a long time. They completed dominated every time they touched the football.
  • The Viking OL did a good job picking up Clover’s A gap blitzes. They rushed hard and gave Yex time to make plays.
  • It was good to see ZyKamren Robinson make an impact tonight. He has a bright future at Spartanburg.
  • It’s always good to get past round 1. Region 3 was 4-0 and could possibly all win in round 2 to set up an all Region 3 Quarterfinals.
