Spartanburg County

Region III-5A baseball off to thrilling start

By Jed Blackwell/The Spartanburg Sports Report

Baseball in Region III-5A is off to a hot start.

Two dramatic openers marked the start of region play on Tuesday, as Spartanburg edged Byrnes 2-0 and Boiling Springs took a dramatic win over Dorman 7-3 in eight innings.

The Vikings got five innings of two-hit ball from R.J. Dantin and a save from Jax Cash in their victory over the Rebels. Cash helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-3 along with teammate Garrett Stevens. Kyle Hanna led the way at the dish for the Vikings, finishing 3-for-3.

Seven innings wasn’t enough to settle matters at Boiling Springs, as the Bulldogs downed Dorman in thrilling fashion. Catcher John Michael Faile blasted a walk-off grand slam with two out in the eighth inning and the score tied at 3-3 to give the Bulldogs a 7-3 victory.

Both county matchups will conclude three-game region series later this week. The second games in each series will be at Byrnes and at Dorman on Thursday, with the final games at Spartanburg and at Boiling Springs on Friday.
