Spartanburg County

State Track field crowded with local athletes

By Jed Blackwell/The Spartanburg Sports Report

The SCHSL State Track and Field Championships will feature a host of local talent on Friday and Saturday, with several athletes taking either No. 1 overall seeds or Upper State championships into their respective events.

Three individual athletes and a relay team are the top seeds in the 5A field, with that portion of the competition beginning on Friday evening. Dorman’s Massey brothers are the top seeds in the throws, with Jordan qualifying first for the discus and Jayson holding down the No. 1 position in the shot put. Spartanburg’s Hudson McKinney is the top seed in the 5A boys 800 meters, while the County and Region champion Byrnes 4×100 boys relay will be seeded No. 1 for their race.

In the 3A classification, which also begins competition on Friday night, five athletes and two relay teams will enter as Upper State champions. In the boys events, Woodruff’s Dymitric Ray won the 200 meters at last year’s Upper State meet, while Broome’s Keyvon Graham won the 400 meters and teammate Daniel Hurren took the 800 meter title. The Broome boys 4×100 team also won an Upper State crown.

In the 3A girls competition, Woodruff’s Maggie Rhodes is the Upper State champion in both the 1600 and 3200 meters, while Chapman’s 4×400 meter relay team won last week’s title.

Chesnee and Landrum finished well in last week’s 2A Upper State championships and will be well represented in Saturday afternoon’s 2A/1A meet. Isaiah Ellis took Upper State titles in both the 110 hurdles and the 400 hurdles for the Chesnee boys. If the Lady Eagles’ A’Miracle Scott is able to duplicate her long jump that won a title a week ago, she’ll likely be the new state record holder. Landrum’s duo of Taylor Harris and Morgan Decker claimed the high jump and discus titles, respectively.

Other state qualifiers along with their events, schools and last week’s finish are listed below.
