The high school football season is rolling right along as we are already in week 2 of the high school football season. Let’s take a look at the matchups this week in the 5A/4A ranks.
Chapman @ Boiling Springs
What a game this was a year ago as both of these teams traded blows and the game remained tied until the fourth quarter when Chapman was able to make a few big plays on defense and the Panthers won the game 55-28.
The Bulldogs will look to flipped the script and defend their home field when taking on the panthers this week. The bulldogs will have to rely heavily on their experienced defense and the legs of Charles McFadden on offense this week.
The panthers are coming off a week where they just scored 70 points on Seneca so Boiling Springs defense will certainly have their hands filled. Chapman even on the road and facing a 5A school are certainly the favorites in the game, if Boiling Springs is going to win they will have to create turnovers and control the clock by having their run game going to keep the panthers high powered offense off the field.
Spartanburg @ Archer
Archer is a very talented team out of Georgia and the Vikings discovered that last year when they hosted the Tigers and lost 51-17.
The Vikings last week picked up the victory against Greer. They were able to find some offense in that first half and it appeared perhaps they might have found something offensively.
The second half however they couldn’t find the end zone as Greer scored 12 points but they were able to hold on.
This is a tough challenge for the Vikings this week. They will need execute all four quarters in this one on both sides of the ball if they are going to win this one.
Northwestern @ Dorman
Well things will not get any easier for the Northwestern Trojans as they are entering this week 0-2 after losing in the opener to South Pointe and last week to the Byrnes Rebels. Now they get another powerhouse team with the Dorman Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers their first two games made football look real easy as they have steamed rolled past their opponents outscoring them 111-7.
Both sides of the ball for the cavaliers have looked sharp and I see them having no problems cruising to their third victory of the season.
Union @ Gaffney
I say it all the time that Union plays the most difficult non-region schedule, as they travel to Gaffney to take on a loaded Indians team.
The Yellow Jackets surprisingly fell to AC Flora
Last week after a battling the Chapman panthers pretty tough in the opener. So now having to go to Gaffney the yellow jackets could start the year 0-3.
Gaffney dominated a greenwood team last week in their season opener, showing why they are one of the most regarded teams in the area.
I look for Union to battle the Indians but in the end I feel like this Gaffney team will be a little much for the Yellow Jackets to handle.
Hough @ Byrnes
Byrnes in the early going this season has also lived up the hype that has surrounded them. They were on the road last week against Northwestern which I thought would be a small test for them instead they crushed the Trojans 40-0.
Hough is 1-0 this season and I am sure they are talented as Byrnes is looking for a challenge before their region play begins, but the way the Rebels are playing right now it’s hard seeing them getting knocked off this week especially at home I believe the Rebels start off the year 3-0.
Greer @ Westside
It’s been a rough start to the year for the Yellow Jackets as they are 0-2. They have plenty of talented but not quite as experienced as they have been in the past few years.
So right now they are going through some growing pains and dealing with some of their key players being hurt.
Greer put together a nice effort in the second half of the Spartanburg game winning the second half 12-0. Maybe the found some momentum that will carry over this week on the road against Westside.
