Week 1 2A/3A Preview

Week 0 is in the books and now week 1 of the high school football season is here! Let’s take a look at the local matchups from the 2A/3A rank.

Byrnes at Chapman-Spartanburg Nutrition Game of The Week

I can’t lie I’ve been waiting on this game to happen for a long time! You have a team that has been a powerhouse at the 3A level in the Chapman Panthers squaring off against a team that has been a powerhouse at the 5A level. If your looking to go to a fun football game on Friday night this certainly will be one of them!

Byrnes is coming off their week 0 win over Greer by a final score of 55-14. Byrnes quarterback Gabe Rogers had himself a strong performance in the opener completing 10 out of 16 passes for 239 yards and 5 TDs.

The Chapman Panthers will be opening their season this week and it’s certainly a test right off the bat for them.  The Panthers are bringing back a lot of experience starting with their quarterback Drew Settle, who had a really strong year last season. Settle will have familiar receivers to throw to as DJ Black and Walt Waddle are returning players, and he will have his entire starting offensive line is returning as well.

I look for this game to be a shootout and close all the way through, don’t let the 5A school size fool you into thinking the 3A school doesn’t have a chance to win this game. Chapman in recent years has beaten the Boiling Springs Bulldogs. I certainly think they will have a chance to win again against the Rebels, but as of right now I will give the Rebels the slight edge to win this one.

Chesnee at Broome

Both of these teams are coming off losses in week 0 and are looking to bounce back to improve 1-1 on the season and avoid the 0-2 start.

Broome traveled down to Powedersville last week and jumped out to a decent size lead, as one point in the game they were winning 28-19. But Powedersville made some adjustments and would go on to outscore the Centurions 46-28.

The Chesnee Eagles traveled to Woodruff and were in a tight game at the half as the Eagles trailed 28-21, but the Wolverines were too much to handle in the second as they would pull away winning the game 41-28.

In this one, I am leaning towards Chesnee on the road, but I expect Broome to have some leads in this game the question with them can they finish and hold onto the game.

Christ Church at Landrum

The Landrum Cardinals will kick off their season at home vs Christ Chruch on Friday night. The Cardinals are looking to bounce back from their season a year ago.

There are a few questions that I am waiting to see for the Cardinals like who will be behind center leading their offense. Cooper Gentry has been their guy behind center the past two years and he did a real solid job for them, but with him graduating it appears the Cardinals will turn to senior Grayson Foster to lead their offense.

I don’t know very much about what Christ Chruch has this season, but I do know last year they were able to beat the Cardinals by a score of 28-10, so the Cardinals will try to flip the scrip on Christ Church and pick up the win to start the year off right.

Woodruff at Hillcrest

The Woodruff Wolverines are fresh off an impressive win over the Chesnee Eagles as alluded to earlier in the article. Carson Tucker had a great efficient performance in the win for the Wolverines completing 15 out of 18 passes for 251 yards and 4 TDs. The Wolverines will need that kind of performance again this week against Hillcrest.

Hillcrest is coming off a loss in a tight game against Greenwood by a final score of 30-23. The Rams quarterback threw the ball 40 times in the loss completing 23 passes for 290 yards. He threw two touchdowns in the losing effort, but he can certainly sling so Woodruff will have a challenge defensively of stopping the passing game of Hillcrest.

I think this is a real good test for Woodruff and a game that will help make them better, but it’s a tough matchup for them and I think the depth will be the difference in giving Hillcrest the win.
