Week two of the high school football season is behind us and it is time for week three. Week two didn’t have too many surprises and my picks were pretty good at 6-1 for the week. My one loss was Union falling to Laurens. With the 6-1 record that brings my overall record to 13-4.
Let’s see what week three has in store.
Spartanburg at Boiling Springs- Spartanburg Nutrition Game of the Week
The Viking offense was much improved last week with junior quarterback Raheim Jeter at the helm. While still not 100% back Jeter provided the spark the Vikings needed to get their first win of the year and win number 100 for Coach Mark Hodge in his career. Jeter made some good throws and when he is 100% ready to go and they finally allow him to run this Spartanburg offense is going to be really dangerous. The defense last week looked good at times but seemed to be gassed at the end of the game.
Boiling Springs is a young football team. They are continuing to grow and improve each week. They have a couple of really athletic quarterbacks and have speed all over the field. The defense is fast a could give the Viking offense some trouble.
Byrnes at Westside-
The Rebels fell to Dutch Fork last week but kept it close for a while. The Dutch Fork offense was just too much right now for Byrnes. That and the fact that the offense for Byrnes started to stall after the injury to Mack Long. So the Byrnes Rebels have big shoes to fill at running back and a lot more of that will fall on the backs of the defense. This defense is quick and can get the job done.
Pick: Byrnes
Union at York-
The Yellow Jackets played their first game of the season last week and fell to Laurens. The Jackets were coming out of Covid shutdown and were still missing some key players. JaBryson Hunter had a great first have on both sides of the football. The Jackets will have to find some more help on the defensive side of the ball. York is usually a quality opponent the Cougars are 0-1 after losing last week to a team out of North Carolina.
Pick-Union
Chapman vs Brookland-Cayce-
The Panthers bounced back last week from an opening week loss to Byrnes by beating Boiling Springs. Drew Settle had a huge game that earned him player of the week honors. The Bearcats are 1-0 with a win over Blythwood. I think this Chapman offense will be too much for Brookland-Cayce and the Panthers will roll to another win.
Pick-Chapman
Other Picks
I think the Chesnee Eagles will get their first win of the season with a win over R-S Central.
Gaffney vs Mallard Creek should be an interesting football game. Gaffney hasn’t really had time to get rolling good as Covid has affected their schedule a couple of times but I will take the Indians.
Landrum will get win number two on the season if they can clean up some mistakes this week against 96.
Broome will have to score a lot in this game to beat Indian Land as the Warriors put up a lot of points. Can their defense come up with enough stops to win? I have Indian Land in a high scoring game.
