On October 19th 2021 I wrote an article for our website on the injury to Gamecock quarterback Luke Doty and the fact that he would miss the remainder of the 2021 season. In that article I wrote the following:
“Maybe next year Luke Doty is truly 100% healthy and ready to play and can run and stand and throw, if not or if this wasn’t the real reason for what we saw, Beamer better start looking in the transfer portal for another answer. Will there be a big name quarterback there? What going to happen with the QB situation at Oklahoma?”
On December 13th we got the answer to that question when Spencer Rattler announced his commitment from the transfer portal to South Carolina and Coach Shane Beamer via twitter.
The former Oklahoma quarterback was one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy entering the 2021 season before he was benched after some struggles by then Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley.
Rattler will enter the 2022 season as the likely starter in a quarterback room that struggled in 2021 with starters Zeb Noland, Luke Doty, and Jason Brown all splitting the starts this past season. Noland is out of eligibility, Doty will be returning from injury and Brown has a year left. All three qbs had their struggles in the 6-6 campaign.
Rattler will also be joined at South Carolina by Oklahoma transfer Austin Stogner who could prove to be a very valuable weapon at tight end for the Gamecocks.
Shane Beamer was Assistant Head Coach at Oklahoma before taking the head coaching job at South Carolina therefore had a previous relationship with his two latest commits. Prior to these two transfers South Carolina had the 12th best recruiting class for this cycle according to rivals.
