Week 1 2A/3A Preview

Friday night is only a few days away and that means it’s almost time for week 1 of the High School Football season. Let’s take a look at the matchups from 2A/3A for this upcoming Friday Night.

Broome @ Chesnee

Two local teams face off in Week 1 as both teams are coming off of week 0 losses and will try to avoid the 0-2 start. For Broome, they squared off against a solid Powedersville team and it was a rough night for the Centurions they fell behind double digits early and Powedersville never looked back as the Centurions would go on to lose 47-23.

Chesnee found themselves in a back-and-forth type game against Blue Ridge. The Eagles were ahead of the Fighting Tigers several times throughout the game, but in the end, it was Blue Ridge that was able to make enough plays and hold on to the win by a final score of 42-37.

Overall, I see this game being a close one and for Broome, they showed they have a lot of things they must clean up moving forward. For Chesnee it’s about being able to finish, they had their chances last week and fell a little short, which was the case last year for them more often than not, but they do put themselves in a position to win games. Right now I am slightly leaning on Broome making adjustments and winning a close one.

Gaffney @ Union

The Gaffney Indians, who are the reigning 5A state champs did not have the opener they had hope for last Saturday night as they took on South Pointe. South Pointe jumped out of the gates fast and Gaffney could never recover as they would go on to lose by a final score of 42-26.

The Union Yellow Jackets picked up where they left off at the end of last season by getting a win. They defeated Newberry by a final score of 30-14 and the Yellow Jackets really played a solid game in their season opener, but it certainly gets tougher this week for the Yellow Jackets as the Gaffney Indians are coming into town and they probably will be a little tick off by what happened last week.

Union’s defense was solid against Newberry but it will be a true test for them going against the Indian’s offense that didn’t show much last week but they are capable of putting up points in bunches. Right now I am leaning towards taking the Indians as I feel like they will make the adjustments they need to win comfortably on the road.

Landrum @ Berea

The Landrum Cardinals will be ready to open their season on Friday night as the Cardinals will be on the road to take on the Berea Bulldogs. The Cardinals had a solid season last year but they will be looking to make a deeper run in the playoffs.

Berea is also opening their season this week as the bulldogs were a 5-5 football team last year. So it is a tough challenge for Landrum to play a 3A school, but I know that Coach Farmer will have his squad ready to play and I expect to see Landrum have their chances to win this one. Right now I am leaning towards Berea to win this game but I do expect the Cardinals to make it tough for them and will have their opportunities.

Woodruff @ Fountain Inn

The Woodruff Wolverines opened their season against Chapman last Friday Night and they were able to get a big win to start the season by winning in overtime by a final score of 13-7.

The Wolverines were a little off offensively all night and had several chances to break open the game but missed opportunities allowed the Panthers to stay in the game. However, the Wolverines’ defense was lights out in this game and made big plays after big plays and they were the reason why the Wolverines won this game. Last year’s defense was an issue for Woodruff so it will be interesting to see if they can continue this stellar play on that side of the ball.

Woodruff will now be on the road to take on Foutain inn who lost their season opener to West-Oak by a final score of 9-6. I believe the Wolverines will fix the mistakes they made on the offense and I expect their defense to dominate like they did last week and I see the Wolverines winning big.
