3 Things Week 1

Each Week following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field.  Some good, some great, some not so good.  I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to.  So here’s 3 things from Week 1’s loss to Dutch Fork.

1-Spartanburg is really good.  No seriously….that’s it.  We are really really good.  Mark Hodge has built a team that is ready to go compete for a State Title.  The 2 point loss on a last second FG was one of the most impressive games I’ve seen in years.  Back and forth…2 heavyweights going toe to toe in an early season showdown…it was everything you hoped it would be if you love High School Football. Raheim Jeter was 20-24 for 242 yards and 4 total TDs.  Spartanburg now knows it can compete with anyone in the state.  Period. That’s what the 1st two weeks have taught us.

2-Spartanburg’s Defense won’t like that a RB ran for over 300 yards…BUT…when a team doesn’t throw it but just a couple of times..then that number makes a lot more sense.  The Viking defense made some huge stops and is growing up faster than hoped.  The Big plays happened and Jarvis Green is a very special RB for Dutch Fork and his ability was the biggest difference in a 2 point loss for the Vikings.  But the Spartanburg Defense is ready to help this team win big games right now. Charles Woodruff had a big pick and it won’t be his last big play this year.

3-One negative to work on right now – Spartanburg has to clean up their pre snap penalties.  There were way too many false starts the first 2 weeks and if Spartanburg wants to win a State Title, they can’t make those mistakes against the best teams.  The Vikings had 12 penalties for 100 yards against Dutch Fork.
