Week 1 was an unusual week as the storms rolled in the upstate area right around kickoff, which caused many games to be delayed. But last week is in the past and Friday Night is almost here so let’s look at the matchups from the 2A/3A games in our local listening area.
Spartanburg @ Broome
The Spartanburg Vikings suffered a heartbreaking loss to Dutch Fork last Friday Night as they lost by a final score of 27-25. The Vikings will look to avoid a 0-3 start, they have played well but have had a tough schedule so far this season.
The Broome Centurions bounced back from their opening loss to Powdersville by defeating Chesnee by a final score of 54-28. The game went back and forth in the first half but the second half was completely dominated by the Centurions. They will look to build off that second-half performance and pull off a huge upset win against Spartanburg.
Right now I just think the Vikings will be too much to handle for the Centurions and I think they win big.
JL Mann @ Woodruff
JL Mann will travel to Woodruff to take on the Wolverines on Friday Night. JL Mann comes into this matchup with a 2-0 record as they beat Eastside in their opener and followed that with a 14-7 win against Riverside last week.
Woodruff enters this game also at 2-0 with a 14-7 win in overtime against Chapman in Week 0 and they defeated Fountain Inn last week 31-0. The game started last week after 9 pm and both teams decided to play the game with a running clock and no halftime.
JL Mann is 2-0 but they will have their biggest test so far on Friday Night against the Wolverines and I think the Wolverines will be too much to handle and Woodruff will improve to 3-0.
York @ Union
York open their season last week with a win over Nation Ford by a final score of 33-20 so they will be looking to build off that win and improve to 2-0 on the season.
Union is coming into this game 1-0 as they won their season opener back in week 0 by defeating Newberry. The Yellow Jackets last week started their game against Gaffney they were trailing 7-6 in the first quarter when the storms rolled in and surprisingly they never resumed the game.
Union is another team that really challenges themselves in the non-region schedule to prepare them for their region and this is another quality opponent right now I am leaning towards York but I do see the Yellow Jackets playing them tough.
St Joes @ Landrum
St. Joes will be traveling to Landrum on Friday Night as they will bring a 2-0 record with them as they won their opening game against Fox Creek by a final score of 43-7 and then they followed that win up by defeating Blacksburg by a final score of 35-7.
Landrum opened their season last week with a win against Berea in a game which they dominated from the start by winning by a final score of 34-3. The Cardinals have their eye on getting to 2-0 but this game will be no easy task for them. Right now I am leaning towards St. Joes winning this game and improving to 3-0.
Boiling Springs @ Chapman
This a game that features two teams that are struggling offensively to open up the season. Chapman lost to Woodruff in the opener 14-7 in overtime and then they were blown out last week against a solid Byrnes Rebels squad by a final score of 54-7.
Seriously when was the last time that Chapman went back-to-back games scoring under 10 points, and when was the last time we have seen the Panthers held to just 14 points in two games?
Boiling Springs lost by a final score of 43-0 against TL Hanna in the opener and then lost to Mauldin last week by a score of 20-7. Both teams are desperate for a win and to get their offense going so it will be interesting to see who can figure it out on that side of the ball.
Right now I am leaning towards the Chapman Panthers on winning a close one but the way both offenses have struggled this year it might be the first team 10 wins this game.
Walhalla @ Chesnee
Walhalla opened their season last week against Woodmont and it was not the start they were hoping for as they lost by a final score of 53-34.
The Chesnee Eagles fell to 0-2 last week as they lost to Broome as I mentioned earlier in the article Chesnee traded blows with Broome in the first half but fell apart in the second half. The Eagles are a team that has been able to hang around but just can’t seem to close out games.
They will have another challenge against another 3A school in Walhalla but I feel like once again the Eagles will have their opportunities to win this one at home it’s simply about whether can they finish out a game.
