3 Things Week 4

Each Week following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field.  Some good, some great, some not so good.  I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to.  So here’s 3 things from Week 4’s 59-25 win over Riverside.

1-Spartanburg’s run game can carry this team when called upon.  Make no mistake, the Vikings are talented all across the board on offense but the featured star is QB Raheim Jeter. His ability to spread the ball all over the field and make every throw takes this team to new heights.  But the run game is loaded with talent and Drek Carter and Keke Kelly are the best 1-2 punch I’ve seen in years.  Add Jeter’s power run game to the mix and this rushing attack is lethal.  It can carry this Viking Offense to where it wants to go. Last Friday the Vikings ran for 299 yards and 6 rushing TDs.

2-We still have some growing up to do.  The Vikings are so talented but we are making some youthful mistakes at times on Offense, Defense and Special Teams.  That makes sense as the Vikings play a lot of young players.  If we want to win state, we have to clean up the mistakes. The good news is our coaching staff is outstanding and up to the task.

3-Sophomore LB Cam Smith is the next great defender at Spartanburg High School.  Over the past 5 games, I’ve watched this kid play against some of the best teams I’ve ever seen and he rises up in stopping the run, pass coverage, open field tackling…you name it, he does it.  Again he’s just a  Sophomore and plays like a Senior.  #22 is very fast while being a hard hitter…reminds me a little of Cedarius Rookard.
