Week 6 is a little different as games were moved from Friday Night to Thursday Night due to inclement weather from Hurricane Ian. So let’s look at the matchups from 2A/3A in our local listening area.
Broome @ Travelers Rest
Broome is coming into their first region game with a 3-3 record and is coming off an impressive win last week over Broome by a final score of 27-20
Travelers Rest is also coming into the first region matchup with a 3-3 record and they are on a two-game winning streak. Their last game was against Berea and they won in dominating fashion by a final score of 64-0.
I really like the way Broome has been playing the past couple of weeks and even though both teams have played well over the past few weeks, I look for Broome to continue their hot play and pick up a win to begin region play.
Chesnee @ Landrum
The Chesnee Eagles had a bye week last week so they are coming into this region opener with a 0-5 record. It’s been a tough go so far for the Eagles so getting their first win of the season in their first region game could be what they need to turn around their struggles.
Landrum is coming into this game with a 2-3 record and they are coming off another tough loss last week when they were blown out by Blue Ridge 53-21.
This is a game where both teams have not played great football so far this year, Chesnee has been outscored by their opponents 139-214 so far this year and Landrum has been outscored 131-179. Despite Chesnee being 0-5 I am leaning towards them winning this football game, they haven’t been able to close out any close games this year and I expect this one to be close throughout, but my gut is telling me that they make just enough plays and win it.
Woodruff @ Chester
Woodruff will begin their region play on the road to take on Chester on Thursday night. The Wolverines are coming off a loss to Broome by a final score of 27-20. Woodruff had their opportunities in that game but couldn’t execute late and Broome was able to make enough plays to win it.
Chester is coming into this game with a 3-3 record and coming off a win against Batesburg-Leesville by a final score of 42-6 last Friday Night. Chester so far this year has been mediocre at defending their home field with a 1-2 record.
Overall, I feel like this will be a close game, I want to see Woodruff’s defense return to the way they were playing in the first three games of the season. Right now I am leaning towards Woodruff winning a close one.
Clinton @ Union
Union County will be at home for the region opener and Union will be looking to bounce back after back-to-back disappointing losses. Their latest loss was to the Chapman Panthers by a final score of 31-6
Clinton so far this year has been putting together a really strong season as they are coming into this game with a 6-0 record. They have average 49 points per game and have only allowed 21 points per game, so they are winning by very comfortable margins.
I think that trend for Clinton continues as I look for them to win another game comfortably as Union is struggling right now and Clinton is just not the team you want to face when things are not going well.
Carolina Academy @ Chapman
Chapman was impressive last week getting a nice win over the Union County Yellow Jackets by a final score of 31-6 to improve their record to 2-4.
Carolina Academy is entering this game at 2-4 as well but is on a two-game losing streak and their latest loss was to Whitmire last week by a final score of 22-14.
I look for Chapman to begin region play with a win, despite their struggles at times this year they are simply a better team than Carolina Academy and I think their defense is going to have a big night and I see Chapman Panthers getting their second straight lopsided victory.
