The second week of region play is almost here! Many of our teams got off to a good start with the opening week of region play last week so they are looking to start off 2-0 inside their regions, for the other teams that drop their first region game they are looking to pick up the win to get to 1-1. Let’s take a look at the 2A/3A matchups in our local listening area for week 7 of the high school football season.
Blue Ridge @ Broome
The Broome Centurions went into last week’s region matchup against Travelers Rest playing some solid football and that trend continued as they would pick up the win against TR by a final score of 30-21.
Blue Ridge had a bye week last week so they are playing in their region opener. The last game they played was against Landrum and they went on to win big by a final score of 53-21, that win snapped a three-game losing streak for them.
I like the way the Centurions have been playing the last couple of weeks as they have been able to make plays on both sides of the ball and I think they continue that trend and pick up another region win.
Abbeville @ Chesnee
The Chesnee Eagles traveled to Landrum last week for their region opener and the Cardinals dominated the Eagles in every aspect of the game as the Eagles would go on to lose 28-0 to fall to 0-6 on the year. They will look to snap their losing streak and pick up a win, but playing Abbeville will be no easy task.
Abbeville opened their region schedule against Liberty and they rolled to a 40-7 win. Abbeville is 4-2 so far on the year and they are definitively the favorite to win this region.
For Chesnee to win this game they are going to have to win the turnover battle and force several turnovers and control the time of possession. Unfortunately, I do not see that happening and I see Abbeville winning big.
Ninety-Six @ Landrum
As mentioned earlier the Landrum Cardinals won their first region matchup against Chesnee last Friday night 28-0. Colton Link had himself a big night and won our player of the week award by rushing the ball 18 times for 219 yards and 2 TDS. They could use that effort from him again this week.
NInety-Six opened their region play against Blacksburg and they picked up the win by a final score of 24-13. The Wildcats came into this game with a record of 4-2 on the year and have fared well on the road so far this season with a 3-0 record, so they would love to pick up their fourth road victory.
I like how Landrum came out last week and would love to see them play like that for a second consecutive week. I look for this game to be close but right now I am leaning towards Landrum.
Chester @ Union
Union opened up their region play against a really good Clinton team last week and things just simply didn’t go well for the Yellow Jackets. They would go on to lose 61-7 and obviously looking at that score the Yellow Jackets didn’t have a prayer in this game, so they are looking to end the funk they are in and put a W in the win column.
Chester opened their region play against Woodruff last Friday night and this game was one of those games where it went back and forth but Chester was able to make enough plays and won by the final score of 34-27.
Chester is a solid team and they have been playing pretty good football coming into this week riding a two-game winning streak and Union has been on a downward spiral I am going to take Chester to win this one.
Emerald @ Woodruff
Woodruff as mentioned earlier dropped their region opener to Chester 34-27. They had a 21-7 lead after the first and it looked like the Wolverines were well on their way to getting a win, but Chester went on a massive run and took a double-digit lead. Woodruff would close the gap to 7 points but couldn’t find a way to come from behind and get the win.
Emerald was in a non-region matchup last week so they will be making their region opener. Emerald picked up their second win in a row by beating Eastside 27-14.
I look for Woodruff to bounce back and win this game, Woodruff has been very up and down as of late so I would love to see them settle back into a groove and I think they start that this week by getting the win!
