Fox Sports Spartanburg Now Home of USC Upstate Athletics

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate Athletics and Fox Sports Spartanburg have announced a new comprehensive multiyear marketing agreement that will make the Spartanburg-based radio station the new home of USC Upstate Athletics. The package includes a slate of 70 live events broadcast on the station including men’s basketball, baseball and select women’s basketball and softball contests.  In addition to live events, the station and department will collaborate on expanded opportunities to promote all 15 Upstate athletics programs by hosting regular interviews featuring coaches, student-athletes and university leadership outside of athletics.

“We are so thrilled to be the flagship station for USC Upstate Athletics. Our mission is to promote Spartanburg athletics and USC Upstate is the perfect fit for us.  Our goal is to bring the Spartans into more homes than ever before,” said Fox Sports Spartanburg president Ryan Clary.

In the Spartanburg area, Fox Sports Spartanburg can be heard at 98.3 FM and 1400AM. The station also hosts a live stream by downloading the free Fox Sports Spartanburg app via the Apple Store or Google Play and clicking the Listen Live icon.  Live audio is also available on the station’s website at SpartanburgSportsRadio.com and by searching WSPG-AM on the TuneIn Radio app.

“This partnership is truly transformative for USC Upstate Athletics!  This will give us a new platform to showcase our University and sports teams throughout Spartanburg and our greater Upstate community.  Not only will we have compelling sports content, we’ll have the opportunity to introduce the sports loving segment of our community in the Upstate to the broader University overall, which is a home run!  I couldn’t be happier to partner with Fox Sports Spartanburg and want to say a special thank you to owner Ryan Delaney and president Ryan Clary for their efforts to make this partnership a reality!” said vice chancellor and director of athletics Daniel Feig.

The Fox Sports Spartanburg radio partnership will work in tandem with the 75+ live video events produced each year for ESPN+ by the department as part of an annual broadcasting agreement with the Big South Conference.

“What is most exciting about this partnership is that it is an expansion of our efforts to promote the excellence of our student-athletes and our university. This does not replace or alter our ESPN+ package, we’re now adding even more coverage.  This agreement is about more than athletics, we have a blank slate to tell many great stories about our university to the community through this platform,” said Lenny Mathis, senior associate athletic director for external operations.

Ryan Clary will become the radio play-by-play voice of the Spartans beginning with the 2023-24 basketball season.

“I’m so honored to be the Voice of the Spartans.  It’s very exciting to see the direction this athletic department is heading and I’m very ecstatic to be a part of it.  We’re going to broadcast a minimum of 70 games so Spartan fans can have access to their teams like never before,” said Clary. “I’m very thankful to Daniel, Lenny and all of our great sponsors for helping to make this possible. I can’t wait to get started.”

USC Upstate Athletics now anchors a full slate of live sporting events and local programming on Fox Sports Spartanburg.  The station produces two live shows every weekday including “Bump and Run” hosted by Tyler Shugart mornings from 7:00 – 9:00a.m.  Each afternoon, Clary, Alex Smith and Anthony Greer co-host the longest running locally produced radio show in the market, “Open Mic Daily,” now in its 18th year. “Open Mic” airs from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.

In addition to the Spartans, Fox Sports Spartanburg is the home of Spartanburg High School football, University of South Carolina football, the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons.  Aside from any conflicts with SHS football, USC Upstate live events take priority on the station.
