Week three. How quickly the time passes. We have some interesting games on tap for this week. Some rivalry games, some good measuring stick games, and some games that promise to just be down right entertaining.
Landrum vs Polk County-Game of the Week
This game returned last year after a hiatus of several years due to legit animosity between these two teams. Things got heated and they needed to cool off. Last years game wasn’t close Polk won big. Things are a different this year. Both teams have new coaches. Both teams have new looks on offense as both are more spread than in previous years and they like to throw it a little bit more.
Landrum Coach Brent Bridges told me that he things the offense is about 3/4 of the way there learning the new offense. Last week against St Joe’s they had a lot of drops and didn’t take care of the football very well. They will have to do a better job of that this week. I think they will.
Pick: Landrum
Byrnes at Greer-
When Martin went down for Greer a couple of weeks ago we were all worried about the Greer Yellow Jackets because their star running back was out. Last week they may have found another in the long line of great Greer running backs. Chris Hall ran all over Blue Ridge last week, carrying the ball 18 times for 261 yards and 4 touchdowns. Very impressive stuff and I am sure Coach Will Young was somewhat relieved that they found another guy. But, it was Blue Ridge. No offense to the Tigers but, there defense isn’t one of the better ones in the state. This week is a different story.
We have talked for several weeks about this Byrnes defense and how fast and talented they are. They will provide the Greer offense, and any offense for that matter, one of the toughest challenges they will see all season long.
Last week the Byrnes offense had a good night knocking off a good Greenville Red Raiders team. Quarterback Andrew Stevens had a big game going 22 of 36 for 319 yards and 4 touchdowns in route to being our player of the week. I look for him to have another big game tonight.
Pick: Byrnes
Boiling Springs at Hillcrest-
I really think this is the most interesting game of then night. We continue each week to see the progress and improvement of this Boiling Springs football team. A convincing win over Chapman last week has a lot more people talking about the Bulldogs and their chances at finishing a lot higher in the region standings than anyone would have guesses prior to the start of the season. With Spartanburg and Dorman both struggling to find an offense Boiling Springs is starting to catch a lot more looks when it comes to region 2 5A.
Tonight’s game will be a real measuring stick type game for the Bulldogs. While beating Mauldin and Chapman are great wins beating Hillcrest would definitely be taking the next step and would have a lot more people paying attention to this team.
This one will be tough though. Hillcrest is a good team. A team that has already garnered themselves a lot of attention as on of the teams to compete in 5A. I think this could be a really competitive game that will come down to the end.
Pick: Hillcrest
Other Picks:
Broome beats Union County tonight
BHP will take care of Woodruff
Chapman will get the offense going tonight and beat Laurens
Mallard Creek beats Gaffney
Chesnee will defeat R-S Central
There you have my picks for Week 3. Have fun at the games tonight it should be just a little bit cooler, I hope.
