We are inching closer and closer to the start of region play as week 5 of the high school football season is already here. Let’s take a look at the matchups from 2A/3A rank in our local listening area
Woodruff @ Broome
Woodruff is coming off a victory against Chesnee 40-15. Woodruff came into that game struggling so they desperately needed a performance like they got to get them back on track. But things are not going to be easy for them as they will be on the road taking on a very good Broome football team.
Broome picked up their fourth win of the season last week as they won in dominate fashion against Berea in their home coming game by a final score of 58-6. Broome an average so far this season have outscored their opponents 40-17. They will look to continue their stellar play with another win on Friday night.
For Woodruff getting their passing game going is extremely important especially being able to convert on key third downs will go a long way for them. On defense the Wolverines must stop the rushing attack of Broome, which is a whole lot easier said than done, but if you can’t stop the run the Centurions are going to have a field day with you.
Right now I am leaning towards Broome being able to control the game by successfully running the football and getting another win.
Union @ Chapman
The Union County Yellow Jackets were able to find a way to get a much needed win last Friday night when they defeated Laurens 20-17. Union like always plays a brutal schedule and this game was one that if they didn’t win it was possible they would go winless this season, but they came from behind and took care of business now they look to make it two in a row against a strong Chapman team.
Chapman found themselves in a dog fight against a really strong Clinton team. Clinton was able to score and had a chance to tie it to force overtime but they decided to play aggressive and go for the win by going for two. They were stopped and Panthers picked up their fourth win of the year.
For Union they are going to need to force some turnovers and give their offense some great field position to start their drives. And offensively when they get inside the red zone they must make the opportunities count by finding the endzone.
For me I think Chapman is just too much to handle for the Yellow Jackets, I expect the Yellow Jackets to play hard and compete but I think Chapman will wear them down and pull away in this one.
Blue Ridge @ Landrum
Blue Ridge has had a rough start to their year as they are entering this game at 0-5. Their latest lost came to the hands of Wade Hampton as they fell 32-31.
Landrum won their second consecutive game last week as they beat up on SCA by a final score of 40-20. The Cardinals will look to stay hot and push their win streak to three on Friday night.
Landrum should be feeling confident going into this game and they fact they have been getting their offense going the last couple of weeks scoring 40+ points in those back to back wins. Now they are facing a Blue Ridge team that is averaging giving up 44 points per game.
I like the way the Cardinals have been playing and I think they continue to find success offensively against a struggling defense and team I look for them to beat this 3A school.
