Each Week following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field. Some good, some great, some not so good. I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to. So here’s 3 things from Week 5’s 57-0.
1- 78% That’s the completion percentage for Viking QB T.J Johnson. On its own, that’s an incredible number. But when you factor in who Spartanburg has played this season, the lack of time he’s had in the backfield, and he’s only started games this season at the Varsity level, and you’ll see 78% as a number never thought possible. T.J has made mistakes of course, but he’s been an incredible leader of the Viking Offense this season. His 50 yard TD pass to Justin Rice was a thing of beauty Friday Night in the win over Mauldin.
2- We’ve spend a lot of time on the Defense in my 3 Things articles this season but not enough time on the Cornerbacks. I want to highlight Jr Elijah Roseburg this week. He had his first Varsity Interception in the win over Mauldin as well as a couple of key coverages on deep passes. I’ve really enjoyed watching the development of the 3 JRs, Roseburg, Don Kinard and Quincy Haywood.
3-This team is ready to compete. After 6 games, some against the best competition anyone will see in this state, the Vikings are ready to go this week. They’ve improved in all areas including on the line of scrimmage. This team has incredible speed, size, and discipline. This group will have a very tough task this week on the road against Byrnes. There’s nothing like Region 2 5A in this state.
