Each Week following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field. Some good, some great, some not so good. I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to. So here’s 3 things from Round 1 31-7 win over Rock Hill.
1-The OL continues to improve. This is not just about the talent levels of the opponent, and make no mistake, we’re still not where we want to be…but I’m so impressed with the Viking OL the past few weeks. It’s amazing what reps, and continuity can do for an OL. This group led the way for a 210 yard night for Viking RBs, led by Trenton Lynch’s 130 yard performance. RT Joseph Flores had his 2nd straight excellent game as there were multiple big runs off the right side. If this group can continue to get a push, the Vikings will continue to push their way through the 5A bracket.
2-The Viking Defense has been Epic this season but the one area we’ve needed to improve on throughout the year is forcing more Turnovers…we did so Friday Night. The Vikings had 3 INTs, and almost had a 4th. Safety Charles Woodruff, CB Don Kinard, and DB Brooks Vaughn all had picks and the Vikings also forced a fumble and scored on the play. We’ll need this group to continue to force turnovers every game the rest of the season, but there’s nothing and I mean nothing this defense can’t do.
3-If there’s an immediate area we need to work on as the Vikings will travel to JL Mann in round 2, the Vikings are still making too many big mistakes. Each week the opponents will get better and better and at this point in the year, it’s important for the Vikings to clean up the little things…it’s what can make a difference in a playoff win or loss.
