High School

Final 3 Things

Each Week/Year following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field.  Some good, some great, some not so good.  I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to.  So here’s 3 things from the 2023 Season.

1-That was the best Defense in High School Football I’ve ever seen. On the last game of the year we held JL Mann to under 100 yards of total offense and 22 came on a fake punt.  Overall from start to finish this defense was never off.  Every single game this group brought it.  I’ve spent week after week talking about individual players for this group – so today I won’t do that.  This group as a unit deserves to be recognized as a unit – one group…and they were the best one group I’ve ever seen in my 14 years at Spartanburg High School.

2-The Running Back room is in great hands – Freshman RB Trenton Lynch finished the year with 824 yards on 111 carries.  Factor in Calvin Edwards Choice and Chris Sutton, and this group next year will be as strong of a group as SHS has.  The WR room will be right there too with Justin Rice, Zy Williams Bond, and Zeke Bell Boyd all returning.  Plus there’s another wave of very good WRs that will be JRs and Sophs.  Spartanburg will once again have a ton of weapons.

3-On a personal note – I just want to say how much I’m gonna miss my friend Grey Ramsey. He’s off to be the Head Coach and AD at MVP.  Grey and I chat one way or another every week and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with him. He’s gonna do big things at MVP but I truly hope this isn’t the last time we get to work together. My goal is 50 years at Spartanburg High School so here’s to one day you roaming our sidelines again.  Always pulling for you Grey.

I really enjoyed this team – this season – this journey with these kids.  I can’t wait for next year.  There’s no one I trust more than Mark Hodge to be guide us where we need to be.  Thanks to everyone at Spartanburg High School, especially my friend Todd Staley.  I can’t wait for next season.  Go Vikings!
