Union Coach Brian Thompson Steps Down

According to a release from the Union County School District, Union County High School Head Football Coach Brian Thompson will not return for the 2024-2025 season.

Thompson had just completed his sixth season at the helm for the Jackets, that saw the team post a 1-9 record. The teams lone win in 2023 came against the Laurens Raiders in non region play.

Thompson was named UCHS Head Coach in 2018 after Bradley Adams left the Jackets to take over at Woodruff. In his first season with Union the Jackets posted a 10-4 record that saw them fall to Chester 21-14 in the Upperstate Championship game. In year two the Jackets fell to Camden in the 3rd round of the playoffs posting a 9-4 record and winning the region championship.

During the Covid season of 2020 the Jackets posted a 4-2 record but failed to make the playoffs because the two losses to region opponents caused them to finish third in the region and only two teams got in.

2021 saw the Jackets post a 1-7 record overall and again fail to make the playoffs. 2022 saw the Jackets miss the playoffs again, with a 2-7 record, winless in region play.

Overall Thompson posted 27-33 record in his time at Union County, which was his first head coaching job after serving as a defensive coordinator for many years at previous schools.
