2024 Week Zero Picks

We made it. The 2024 High School Football season is finally here! Whether you want to call it week zero or week one it really doesn’t matter.  The only thing that matters is that tonight we get real, meaningful, high school football.  Games that count.

Last season flew by at what felt like a record pace. Ending in heartbreak early in the playoffs for most of our area teams.  There is a ton of new this year around our area. New coaches, new players, and even a new school. We have waited long enough and this year promises to bring excitement and hopefully some high level high school football.

Boiling Springs vs Greer:

I like this game.  We have watched over the last few years the Bulldogs continue to grow and improve under coach Matt Reel.  This year it looks like they are primed to do the same. With a returning experienced quarterback in Lincoln Huskey the Bulldogs are already ahead of a lot of the teams in our area.  Also with the expectation by a lot of folks that region 2 5A may have a down year Boiling Springs may have a shot to finish very high in the region.

Greer lost their best player from last year to the high school transfer portal that is Greenville County.  So they will have to replace one of the most prolific running backs in the state. However, for as long as I have known anything about Greer football the Yellow Jackets have always had the next great running back already waiting in the wings.  If I were a running back I would always be good with running behind an offensive line coached by Will Young. He knows what he’s doing.

Tonight I think Boiling Springs squeaks one out at home, but this could be the best game of the night.

Pick- Boiling Springs

Greenville at Dorman-

Both of these teams lost some really good players to MVP durning the summer.  Greenville also has a new head coach after Greg Porter departed for Laurens.

Dorman has a lot to be excited about, they have some good young players and a second year head coach who seems to have things trending in the right direction.  The question for me is will Dorman be able to find a quarterback to take the reigns and be able to successfully throw the football with consistency? That has been an issue. Running game has been good, throwing has been a different story.

I think Dorman will improve as the season rolls along but it may take some weeks before they are where they need to be.

Pick-Greenville

Landrum vs Walhalla

Landrum in a spread? Is the world coming to an end? Well probably so but that’s a different conversation.  Coach Brent Bridges in his second year has opened up, well maybe rewrote is a better word, the Landrum playbook.  While the Cardinals will absolutely still run the football a lot, the fact that the will throw it more than twice in a game is world changing.  I can’t wait to see the new look Cardinal offense!

Pick-Landrum

Gaffney vs Crest

Never mind Crest backed out. Gaffney has scheduled another game for their previous off week and now have week zero off

Other Picks-

TL Hanna over Byrnes Road Rebels

BHP  over Broome

Daniel beats Chapman

Newberry defeats Union

Clinton  squeaks out one over Woodruff

Pendelton over Chesnee

And on Saturday

MVP starts 1-0 with a win over Atlantic Collegiate
