Broome

Week 2 2A/3A Preview

Week 2 of the season is just a few days away and there is once again many exciting games on the slate. Let’s take a look at the games from the 2A/3A regions in our local listening area.

Spartanburg @ Broome

Broome is coming into this game after a week 1 victory against Chesnee where they won by a final score of 34-27. Jameson Dearbury was impressive in his second start throwing for 332 and yards two passing touchdowns. They also accumulated 175 yards on the ground so they had a nice balance offensively and will need to have that again against a strong Spartanburg defense.

Spartanburg played their first home game of the season against the defending state champs Dutch Fork. The Vikings played them tough as the game was tight in the first half but Dutch Fork found their rhythm and started to pull away in the second half going up 24-7. A lightning delay came with about 7 minutes left and the teams decided to call it a game.

Broome to win this game, they will have to find a way to maintain that balanced attack they had last week against Chensee I am not sure if they will be able to do that against Spartanburg’s defense. I know Spartanburg has some injuries but I do think this is a game that Spartanburg should win very comfortably.

Boiling Springs vs Chapman

The Chapman Panthers picked up their first win of the season a week ago in a hard-fought battle against St. Joes, the game for the most part went back and forth but the Panthers were able to make a run late and win 35-21.

Boiling Springs on the other hand improved their record to 2-0 as they took care of business against Mauldin winning 32-12. This was simply a game the Bulldowns were in control of through the start, which was expected.

Chapman is a young team that is still figuring things out, so far they have been able to run the football as Justin Dawkins had 5 rushing touchdowns and 202 yards on 26 carries. Josiah Copeland added 118 yards on 20 carries. They will need that run game to wear out the Bulldogs, but they will need some big throws from their QB Josiah Moore.

If the Bulldogs can stop the run and make the Panthers one-dimensional on offense by forcing them just to pass, which is crazy to say because over the years the Panther’s passing game has been elite, but that aspect of the offense so far has not come together. I think the Bulldogs will have some success at stopping the run and forcing more passing, which will play right into their hands and they will get the win.

Walhalla @ Chesnee

The Chesnee Eagles are 0-2 to start this season and are looking to avoid that 0-3 start but to do so they will have to beat Walhalla who is off to a 2-0 start. The Eagles last week lost in a close-on to Broome. They found themselves down early but fought back and gave themselves a chance but they couldn’t quite catch up.

Walhalla improved to 2-0 after they put a beating on Pickens last Friday night winning 49-16. Led by their star Running back Landon Robinson, who had 37 carries 226 yards and 3 touchdowns he is certainly a handful for anybody to have to stop.

That is the key for the Eagles if they can stop Robinson and get their running game going then they should win this game, but if they don’t it could be a long day for them. Right now I am leaning toward Walhalla of getting to this win, I just think stopping the Robinson will be too much of a task.

Ware Shoals @ Landrum

The Landrum Cardinals bounced back from their week 0 loss to defeat Berea last week 46-6. It was a slow start for the Cardinals but as the game went on they just started clicking and put everything together and put Berea in their rearview mirror.

Ware Shoals fell to 0-2 last week against 96 by a final score of 41-30. So far in both Ware Shoals games, they have been able to put some points on the board but their defense has struggled mightily allowing 43 points per game so far this season.

I could see this game going back and forth throughout but in the end, I think Landrum’s defense will be able to make enough plays and get enough stops for their offense to come through and win this one for their second win of the season.

Union @ York

Union fell to 2-0 after last week as they fell to Fairfield Central 52-6 it was another game where they simply didn’t give themselves a chance. They will look to get their first win of the season against York this week.

York is also 0-2 to start the season, but they have lost back-to-back close contests. In week 0, they played Indian Land and lost 22-20, and then last week, they battled Nation Ford and fell 14-12.

York so far has played well defensively but has not consistently established a rhythm to put some points on the board. Union has struggled on both sides of the ball as they will be a work in progress this year and because of York’s defense that has been playing lights out I am leaning towards them to get the win.

Emerald @ Woodruff

Woodruff is off to a 2-0 start after they defeated Fountain Inn 30-27 last Friday Night. They did jump out to a 20-0 lead and the game was looking to be a runaway but Fountain Inn fought back and took a game-winning field goal to get the W.

Emerald is 2-0 as well they beat 96 in their opener and then last week they crushed Travelers Rest 36-0. So two 2-0 teams squaring off make this a fun matchup to watch this week.

Emerald has outscored their opponents 52-6 so far this year, I do think that  3 points per game given up so far will go up this week against a Woodruff team that is able to put up points in bunches. If Woodruff’s defense can string together some stops then I feel their offense will put up enough to win the game.

MVP @ St. Joes

MVP improved to 2-0 as they defeated Soutside Christian last Friday night and it was another game where they were in control the entire time. They did, however, surrender their first points allowed in school history, but it wasn’t big deal because they cruised to a 49-7 victory.

Bryson Drummond had himself a day as he was 11-16 368 yards passing and 4 touchdowns in the win, MVP will love that kind of performance each and every week. St. Joes as mentioned earlier took on Chapman and lost 35-21, they hung tough with them for a while but in the Chapman was too much.

St. Joes is now 1-1 and looking to avoid two losses in a row but that will be a tough task with this loaded MVP team, with playmakers all around they are though to keep up with, so for St. Joes to have a chance they are going to have to sustain long scoring drives to eat up the time of possession and settling for field goals will not get the job done. I think MVP will be too much to handle and they should win big once again.
