Dorman 20 Greenwood 14
Fresh off a loss on the road to the Grayson Rams (Georgia) in which starting QB Brice O’Neal suffered a high ankle sprain very early in the game, the Cavaliers, with Makorean Anderson thrust into the role, took a trip to the Lakelands looking for a 2nd victory on the young season.
The story of this game was by far the Dorman defense. Greenwood features a really talented mobile quarterback in Triston Lewis. He has given defenses some fits over the first few weeks of this young season. But, the Cavs did a great job of containing him, holding him to just 39 yards on 16 rushing attempts. He was also held under 100 passing yards (12 for 31, 94 yards, TD, interception). The Eagles did not manage to crack the scoreboard until the 3rd quarter by means of a 3 yard pick 6 in which a defensive lineman stepped in front of a pass.
In general, this was a low-scoring defensive affair, as Dorman was also essentially made 1-dimensional on offense. The Cavaliers notched a net of 174 yards on 37 rushing attempts, led by Nick Means with 17 carries for 98 yards. Makorean Anderson was 7 for 19 passing with 98 yards and a TD with 2 interceptions.
Erin Gassoway hauled in the lone TD pass (he also led the aerial assault with 72 yards on 3 receptions) – a 48 yard connection, at the 10:33 mark of the 2nd quarter to get Dorman on the board. They later added on with a 25 yard field goal from Ranson Farr to take a 10-0 lead to the half. Following the pick 6 that cut the deficit to 3, Dorman scored 10 unanswered on a Dai’shon Watkins-Hymes 3 yard rush and another Farr field goal, this time from 41 yards out. That cushion was enough to help the Cavs lock up the win.
Dorman will have next week off to get prepped for their region 2-5A opener September 20th at Riverside.
Spartanburg 47 Broome 6
Despite several key injuries, this time most notably top receiver Justin Rice, the Vikings managed to take care of business. Behind solid defense, another huge special teams night for Will Love, and a solid ground attack with tailback Trenton Lynch, Spartanburg was able to hold Broome to just 6 points. Cam’Rich Smith tallied a pick 6 along with several tackles. Will Love was 4-5 on fieldgoals, his lone miss coming from well over 50 yards. Lynch carried the ball 12 times for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Trey Burke went 14 for 21 with 180 yards and a pair of TDs. Zeke Bell-Boyd and Calvin Choice were on the receiving end of those scores as they combined for 115 yards on 7 receptions.
On the Broome side of things, Jameson Dearybury was 17 of 28 passing with 113 yards with the pick six thrown to Cam Smith. No Centurion receiver tallied more than 50 yards as Brayden Simpson led the way with 40 yards on 5 catches. Tyqwon Booker led the ground game with 91 yards on 19 touches while Dearybury tabbed Broome’s lone TD on a 3 yard run.
Spartanburg will be on bye next week while Broome goes on the road to Emerald.
Boiling Springs 52 Chapman 7
The Bulldogs and Panthers renewed their friendly backyard rivalry this week. However, unlike the last few seasons, Boiling Springs entered the week as the favorite. The Bulldogs and Panthers have had some slobberknockers over the last 3 years, and there is little doubt that BSHS was licking their chops at the chance to take out a couple of years worth of frustration out on Chapman.
The Panthers took the opening kickoff and got into plus territory, but as they crossed midfield, they fumbled it, flipping the field in the Bulldogs’ favor. That set the tone for the story of the night. Chapman never could get the field flipped in their favor, leading to a lot of quick strikes from the Boiling Springs offense.
Three plays after the kickoff fumble, Lincoln Huskey hit Kyle Patterson for a 6 yard TD to take the early lead. That would be the only offense in the first 12 minutes of the game. But, the Bulldogs eventually put it away by scoring 2 more unanswered touchdowns. Chapman broke the goose egg with a 1 yard Justin Dawkins TD rush in the waning moments of the 1st half, but Boiling Springs would get the last word with a 1 yard rushing score of their own by Gavin Calhoun, making it 35-7 at the break.
Boiling Springs shut the Panthers out 17-0 in the 2nd half en route to the win and another week where it can be said that they are meeting expectations.
Lincoln Huskey was 14 for 29 with 262 yards and three TDs while Kyle Patterson hauled in 6 of those passes for 128 yards and a pair of TDs. Eli Mobley had a second straight big week with 86 yards on 2 snags. Nine different ball carriers combined for 163 yards on the ground in the win.
With things out of hand, both starter Josiah Moore and backup Bryson Cothran saw significant playing time. Both combined for 111 passing yards while Justin Dawkins, who racked up a lot of yards to go with his 5 rushing TDs a week ago against St Joe’s, was held to just 32 yards.
Boiling Springs joins the list of 5A teams taking a bye week ahead of region play next week while Chapman’s brutal stretch continues, hosting the Clinton Red Devils.
Gaffney 54 Greenville 14
The Indians followed up their strong season-opening road win over JL Mann with a dominant performance in their home opener against Greenville. The Red Raiders drew first blood in this one with a 15 yard TD pass. That was about all she wrote for them. Gaffney went on to score the next 54 points unanswered, amassing 563 yards of total offense and converting 8 of 9 third downs along the way. Jayvon Gilmore slung the ball all over the field, tallying 334 passing yards and 4 touchdowns on a 24-27 night. He also ran for another with 5 carries for 20 yards. Aaron Littlejohn was the leading rusher with 8 catches for 78 yards. Chas Smith logged both a receiving rushing TD on the game, with 46 yards via the run and 35 through the air.
Jamarcus Smith was the leading receiver with 9 snags for 118 yards and a TD. Shane Davidson hauled in 2 of Gilmore’s TD passes in a 4 catch, 87 yard game. Andrew Ruppe added to his hot start to the season in which he accounted for 2 TDs and the game-winning 2 point conversion with a third touchdown this week.
Gaffney will play their 3rd straight in a string of 10 without a break next week as they host Freedom (NC).
Byrnes was off this week and will return to action with a short road trip to Dooley Field for a date with Greer next week to close out non-region play.
Speaking of Greer..
Hillcrest 28 Greer 21
The Yellow Jackets MO of playing a brutal non-region schedule to get prepped to run the table in region play is still on track to work this season as they managed to hang in there against a tough 5A opponent in the Hillcrest Rams. Running back Nick Holmes was a key in Greer’s ability to match blows with the Rams all night long, as he ran for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Kaden Rowland was also solid, finishing just shy of 200 passing yards – 191 in total on a 13 for 24 night with a touchdown. Chance Todd was the leading pass catcher with the lone receiving TD as part of a 3 snag, 81 yard night.
Greer will renew their rivalry with the Byrnes Rebels next week at Dooley Field.
Woodruff 62 Emerald 35
The Woodruff offense has been rolling ever since the season started, but they have not had as strong a showing as they did against the Emerald Vikings this week. After letting a big lead slip away against Fountain Inn last week and having to win on a late fieldgoal, Woodruff jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and added another 20 in the 2nd 12 minutes – more than enough separation to seal the win.
QB TJ Morris was phenomenal, completing 13 of 17 passes for 278 yards and 5 touchdowns. Wideout Kori Moates led the way with a kickoff return TD, 5 catches in 6 targets for 141 yards, and 2 scores while Kam Taylor added 3 more TDs in a 4 catch, 98 yard game. On the ground, 3 different ball carriers scored a touchdown for the Wolverines. Aiden Gibson once again led the way with 19 carries for 123 yards with a score. TJ Morris also ran 8 times for 26 yards and a TD, while Jalen Roberson logged the third rushing touchdown on 6 touches for 26 yards.
Woodruff, now 3-0 on the young season, will host Woodmont next.
MVP 48 Saint Joe’s 21
Mountain View Prep continues to check all the boxes so far this season. They dominated an opponent many would be quick to write off the performance against due to the undeniable inferiority. Last week, they beat Southside Christian handily. But, if beating them wasn’t enough to remove any shadow of doubt, they followed it up with another strong performance against another good team.
Bryson Drummond threw for 337 yards in an 18-22 night with 2 touchdowns. The lone blemish he has had against him this season so far happened in this game – he threw 2 interceptions. Jaylen McGill did his thing on the ground with 18 touches for 174 yards and 4 touchdowns. TJ Gassoway also added a rushing score, running for 51 yards on 5 carries.
McGill was also the leading pass catcher with 9 snags for 152 yards. Kaevon Washington hauled in 2 for 74 yards and a TD while KD Hainsworth tallied 5 receptions for 79n yards and a score.
The Stars will have one more road test next week as they head to Iva to take on the Crescent Tigers.
Elsewhere on the 3A level, Union County fell to York 49-14. They will hit the road for a date with the Blacksburg Wildcats Friday night.
Landrum 54 Ware Shoals 26
The Cardinals offense has been doing something we have not seen much of historically… Running the shotgun and slinging the ball around. With Junior QB Ty Foster’s arm, why not give it a try? Last night, he showed off his arm talent fairly well. In the early going, he was throwing fastballs with too much heat on them, but as the game went along, especially in the 2nd half, he and Titus Poore put on a clinic. But, that is not to say they did not run the ball. The Cardinals had plenty of success on the ground, especially with senior running back Aidan Kelley.
The scoreboard tells a much different story from how this game actually went. Most of the offensive success the Hornets had in this game came from taking deep shots down the sideline in one-on-one coverage in which Landrum’s corners either tried to make a play on the ball and missed or fell down trying to play the ball, resulting in big plays. To be honest, Landrum dominated this game otherwise. The key takeaway here is that Landrum’s offense is very capable so long as they avoid slow starts and Foster can avoid jitters/get touch on his throws from the onset of each game and the secondary can shore up the issues in one-on-one pass coverage, they can be dangerous as they get deeper into the season.
Next, Landrum will head up the road for the annual renewal of the Border War with Polk County.
Chesnee 25 Walhalla 13
The Eagles picked up their first win under new head coach Brett Chappell on Friday night, and did so with a very nice win over a Walhalla team a classification above them.
Evan Lawter got the nod as the starting quarterback, and while his passing numbers won’t wow you (50% completion percentage– 11 for 22, 166 yards, a touchdown, and a pick). But he showed his natural prowess as a runner. He rushed 12 times for 121 yards and a TD. Kyle Thrift ran for 38 yards, but the other two rushing scores went to Bradley Meyers and Jayden Williams, who combined for just 38 yards on 8 touches. Braylon Blanton was the leading receiver with 5 receptions for 79 yards and the lone TD through the air.
Chesnee will head up the road for their border rivalry game Friday as they play Rutherfordton-Spindale Central.
