3 Things Week 2

Each Week following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field.  Some good, some great, some not so good.  I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to.  So here’s 3 things from Week 2’s 47-6 win over Broome.

1- Spartanburg is improving each week on offense.  Now before anyone and everyone point out that this was Broome compared to South Pointe and Dutch Fork…I get it.  But I saw a similar jump from week 0 to week 1.  Yes this one turned out more points and yes opponent matters for that.  But hear me out.  I’m noticing more confidence in Trey Burke who was 12-21 for 189 yards and 2 TDs against Broome.  For the 2nd straight week, he had so much more time to throw and you can see it in his delivery.  Early in the game he had a bad throw where he threw it side armed and off the wrong foot.  As the game went on, he stepped into throws and had time.  WRs Justin Rice and Zy Williams Bond both were out and others like Zeke Bell Boyd and Calvin Edwards Choice stepped up for big catches.  You can see the confidence growing and this offense needed a game like this.

2- Running Back Trenton Lynch, who had 12 carries for 149 yards and 2 TDs, had another step Friday night.  He’s working his way back from injury and still isn’t all the way there, but he had a burst on his 49 yard TD run that we haven’t seen yet this year.  From my view point, he went through that hole faster than expected and I looked down field and he was gone.  It was nice to see what we saw last year and that was that burst that was back.

3- We’ve spent a lot of time talking about Cam Smith and Peyton Jones, but the OLBs CJ Woodruff and Quez Smith have been equally as good this season.  Woodruff now has 25 tackles on the season and Quez had 11 more against Broome…so did Smith by the way.  What impresses me about this LB core is that so far this season, when the Defense needs a big play, the LBs (and Quincy Haywood) make huge tackles and beat the man to the spot time and time again.  This LB core is as deep as I’ve ever seen it at Spartanburg High School.
