The season is moving right along and it’s getting closer to Friday night and more exciting high school football action is coming our way! Let’s take a look at the matchups from 2A/3A in our local listening area.
Broome @ Emerald
The Broome Centurions were at home last week and they had their hands filled against the Spartanburg Vikings as they fell 47-6. Things don’t get easier for the Centurions this week as they will be traveling to Emerald.
Emerald is coming off a lopsided loss to Woodruff 62-35. Coming into the game, Emerald was only giving up 3 points per game on average so far in the season, but after this contest, that jumped up to 23 points per game as the Wolverine’s offense lit them up and did whatever they wanted to do all night long.
So both teams are coming into this game with a lopsided defeat and they want to get right back on the winning track. For Broome to win this game they need to have a balanced attack like Woodruff did, but defensively Emerald can score the ball they are going to have step up on the defensive end and string together some stops. Right Now I am leaning towards Emerald on cleaning some things up defensively and getting the win.
Clinton @ Chapman
Last week the Chapman Panthers like Broome had a very difficult matchup playing up to the 5A classification and playing a Boiling Springs that is clicking on all cylinders. Chapman struggled all night and lost by a final score of 52-7 so they are going to try to bounce back and right the ship against a strong Clinton team.
Clinton after the opening week lost to Woodruff has bounced back to win the last two weeks. Their latest win came against Newberry in a hard-fought contest which they won 23-14.
Clinton has cleaned up some things especially on defense since the first week, they may not have the most explosive offense but have plenty to win games. For Chapman to win the ground game for them is crucial, which it seems to be their bread and butter, but key throwing situations need to be converted or they can find themselves in trouble.
Chesnee @ R-S Central
The Chesnee Eagles had one the most impressive victories of the week last Friday Night as they took down Walhalla to get their first win of the season. The Eagles held the lethal running game that Walhalla possess in check and made some big plays of their own.
R-S Central is coming off a big win last Friday Night as they cruised to 52-20 win over Wilkes Central. The Hilltoppers had a big night on the ground as a team they had 446 yards rushing Elmer Littlejohn led the way with 191 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.
For Chesnee to win this game they will need to stop the run like they did last week if they can do that I see them winning if they can’t then I see them on the losing end of this one.
Landrum @ Polk County
The border rivalry renews on Friday night and the Landrum Cardinals will look to make it three wins in a row on the season and two wins in a row when playing Polk County. Landrum made quick work of Ware Shoals last week putting up 54 points and doing basically whatever they wanted to do.
Polk County lost last week against Blue Ridge 42-36. They went into the half up big 30-13, but completely got outplayed in the second half and blowing that 17-point lead had to hurt, but they will look to get that bad taste out of their mouth and bounce back with a win.
Landrum has a lot of momentum coming into this game and I think that will continue on Friday Night and I see them getting their third win of the season.
Union @ Blacksburg
It continues to be a rough go for Union as they fell to 0-3 last week in another lopsided loss to York 49-14. It’s another tough test this week for the Yellow Jackets as they travel to Blacksburg as they attempt to win their first game of the year.
Blacksburg is 2-0 thus far this season with a win in their opening game against Ware Shoals and they won last week by a final score of 48-12 over Cherryville. Blacksburg has been a program that has been down over the last couple of years but has shown improvement, I think so far their schedule hasn’t been daunting but they are taking care of business of who they go against.
Union has to find a way to keep it close make a few big plays on defense and give themselves a chance to win it, they have not done that thus far this year, and if they don’t do it again in this game they could be looking at 0-4.
Woodmont @ Woodruff
As mentioned earlier Woodruff last week defeated Emerald 62-35, it was impressive the way that they took care of business in this game as they jumped on Emerald early and never looked back. Emerald was coming into this game playing pretty good football but Woodruff was too much to handle
Woodmont is coming into this game 1-1 as they picked up their first win of the season against Pendleton winning 34-19. Woodmont’s defense will have their hands full in this won so far as they are averaging giving up 25 points per game and Woodruff’s offense is averaging 44 points per game.
I think Woodruff is the superior team here and I just don’t see them dropping this one, I look for the Wolverines to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Cresent @ MVP
MVP improved to 3-0 last week in another dominating victory over St. Joes winning 48-21. So far whoever has played MVP has had no shot of winning as they jump on their opponents fast and simply do not let up.
Cresent is coming off an overtime lost to Palmetto 34-28 to fall to 0-2 on the season and now they have to face MVP, that just cruel. Crescent has struggled so far for consistent offense only scoring 17 points per game on the year and if they can’t find a way to keep pace with MVP’s offense its going to be a long night for them.
Just to keep it real MVP is far superior and they should have no problem in this game and should win comfortable to improve to 4-0.
