Week 4 of the High School Football season is just a few days away and we have many exciting games in the area, so let’s take a look at the matchups this week in our local listening area.
Powdersville @ Broome
Broome is coming off a thrilling win last Thursday night against a solid Emerald team by a final score of 28-25 they did have a 28-12 lead late in the game but Emerald made a fierce comeback attempt. Broome stopped Emerald from taking the lead and forced a field goal attempt to tie the game but Emerald missed and Broome hung on to win.
Powdersville picked up their first win of the season last week, defeating Pendleton by a final score of 38-20. Powdersville has had a fairly challenging schedule so far losing to Seneca by a point in the opener and then facing a strong Abbeville and Wren Squad.
I think this could be another close game for Broome but I feel they have been finding their grove offensively as of late and I like them getting the win at home.
Chapman @ Christ Church
The Chapman Panthers are coming off a loss to Clinton last Thursday night and the game appeared closer than it was as the Panthers fell 49-27. The Panthers will look to bounce back on the road against Christ Church this Friday Night.
It’s been a rough go for Christ Church this season as they fell to 0-3 last week when they lost to Riverside 37-20. Christ Church hasn’t found themselves in any games this season where they have given themselves a chance to win. They are only averaging 16 points per game and their defense has been getting scored on left and right as they are averaging 45 points per game.
I know Chapman is not an elite offense at the moment but I think with the struggling defense that Christ Church has coming into this game it can be an opportunity for the Panthers to get themselves going. I look for them to get the win on the road come Friday night.
Woodruff @ Chesnee
The Woodruff Wolverines are on a roll as they won big again last week crushing Woodmont 36-13, The Wolverins in my opinion have been one of the most impressive teams in the area and they will look to continue to be on that roll with a win on the road against Chesnee
Chesnee has also been on a roll as they won two in a row after their victory against R-S Central last week 28-24. But despite being at home this week they got their hands filled against Woodruff. Chesnee will need a big day offensively to keep up with the scoring Woodruff will bring, but If Chesnee can establish their run game and dominate the time of possession it will certainly give them a shot.
As mentioned both teams are coming into this game playing good football and I believe Chesnee like always will give a good fight but I think Woodruff will be too much to handle and I see the Wolverines getting the win.
Chester @ Union
The Union County Yellow Jackets got their first win of the season and Coach Isom’s first win as the Union Head Coach in dramatic fashion last week against Blacksburg.
Down by 21 points with very little time a touchdown and two-point conversation made it 27-14, the Yellow Jackets attempted an onside kick which they recovered. They scored a touchdown on the next play and converted another two-point conversion to make it 27-22. There is no way they were going to recover another onside kick right? Well, they did and found the endzone again and converted the 2-point try to make it 30-27, which they would go on to win by and shock Blacksburg and quite frankly everyone else.
After a big win like that they will now look to make it two in a row if they can beat Chester this week. Chester is 0-3 on the season but has played in several close games where they just couldn’t find a way to make enough plays to win it. Their latest lost was to Saluda 16-12 so offense has been a struggle for them.
With Chester’s struggles, I believe Union will have a chance to get on a winning streak, but this game will be a toss-up, and one play can swing it either way.
American Leadership @ Mountain View Prep
Mountain View Prep uncharacteristically struggled last week in the first half against Crescent, who has not played great football this year. MVP found themselves down 21-7 at the half and made many wonder if we have a major upset on our hands.
Well MVP squashed any notion of that by dominating the second half and outscoring Crescent 41-14 to win 48-21. MVP will now turn its focus to American Leadership.
American Leadership is coming into the game 0-4 their latest loss was last week against Ridge Spring-Monetta 21-6. American Leadership has struggled this season only averaging 6.7 points per game and giving up 40 points per game. I don’t think this one will be close at all look for MVP to put a running clock early in this game.
West Oak @ Landrum
The Landrum Cardinals against their cross-border rivalry Polk County last week, everything went the Cardinal’s way as they dominated 43-6. The Carindlas have been on a winning streak and they will look to extend that streak if they can take care of business at home against West Oak
West Oak is coming off back to back losses and their latest loss was against Franklin County 49-17, They have struggled in general to get their offense going and that could be a problem for them this week as Landrum’s defense has been playing good during their winning streak.
I think Landrum should have another comfortable win I think West Oak has not been playing great football in this game and I see that trend continuing.
