Each Week following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field. Some good, some great, some not so good. I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to. So here’s 3 things from Week 4’s 49-6 win over Eastside.
1-It’s not like I didn’t know we were fast…of course I know we’re fast. What Friday Night showed us is just how fast our whole team is. Eastside struggled with our team speed at every single position. They stood no chance up front, no chance running the football, no chance chasing our talent down. Team speed matters and we are so fast…again not just at WR or DB, but everywhere. Offensively we ran for 228 yards and threw for 202 yards against Eastside.
2-We’ve got a lot of work to do. Make no mistake, there were so open guys and holes were available to run through…Eastside just struggled to execute. While the scoreboard was one sided, some of the plays they missed on offense will be hit correctly as the season progresses. I love how aggressive we are playing, but if we have that many penalties, it’s gonna cost us down the road. On both sides of the ball, we have to play a cleaner game.
3-Trey Burke has taken a Big Step Forward. Yes, the last 2 weeks’ opponents weren’t at the level of the first 2 weeks. But Burke has never had a chance to settle into the starting QB role and boy he looks so much calmer in the pocket. This week will be a different challenge…more like the first 2 weeks, so we’ll get a chance to see just how Big of a Step Forward he took. Against Eastside, he was just 5 for 9 but for 177 yards. His downfield throwing is on point.
