Each Week following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field. Some good, some great, some not so good. I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to. So here’s 3 things from Week 8’s 27-7 win over Boiling Springs.
1-Cam Smith – Ok..we know how special this young man is. Friday he had 13 Tackles, 2.5 sacks, and simply just dominated this game start to finish. But I’m as serious as can be when I write this. Quez Smith, Cam Smith, Peyton Jones, and C.J Woodruff…this is the best collection of LBs on one team that I’ve seen in my 15 years of calling Spartanburg Viking games. What’s crazy is I fully expect this group to keep getting better as the season goes on. All 4 of these guys were incredible in the win over Boiling Springs.
2-Sophomore RB Trenton Lynch had 12 carries for 125 yards and a TD in the win over the Bulldogs. Lynch is now averaging 100 yards per game this season. What was great to see is Lynch healthy because early on he broke and 83 yard TD run. This young man continues to improve and Friday night showed his breakaway speed. This is huge going forward for the Vikings.
3-Last season, the Spartanburg Viking DL was the best DL core in the state and they lost 8 guys from that group going into this season with the only returner being Cory Cheeks. The Sr had 9 tackles and 2.5 sacks against Boiling Springs Friday night, but this group as a whole with Foster, Hale Atkins, and Ferguson have been improving each week. I thought against Boiling Springs they were terrific against the run, holding the Bulldogs to 14 yards rushing. Of course the pass rush was even better overall from the front 7 with close to double digit sacks in the game.
