The season is chugging right along as it is already week 9 of the High School season and there are only a few weeks left until the playoffs begin so there is still plenty of important football to be played. Let’s look at the matchups from this week from the 2A/3A games in our local listening area.
Woodruff @ Chapman
The Woodruff Wolverines suffered their first loss in the season a week ago against MVP. However, the game was a thriller as both teams battled it out, and Woodruff gave them everything they could handle but fell short, losing 40-38. They will look to bounce back this week on the road against Chapman
Chapman is coming off a much-needed win against Union County on the road last Friday night, the Panthers have been struggling as of late so they needed the 35-13 win in the worst way. Now they will look to build off that win this week against a strong Woodruff team.
To me, Woodruff has been able to put up points against everyone and Chapman’s defense hasn’t been awful but they will have their hands full with this Woodruff team. The problem for the Panthers has been on offense and I just see them being up to keep up the pace with Woodruff so I see the Wolverines bouncing back and winning this one.
Broome @ MVP
Broome is coming off a bye week. In their previous game, they had an unexpected loss to the Union County Yellow Jackets. They need to bounce back this week, but that will be a difficult task as they are taking on the undefeated MVP stars this Friday Night.
As mentioned, MVP defeated Woodruff 40-38 last Friday Night. They had a big night from Jaylen McGill, who rushed 29 times for 256 yards and three touchdowns. And you know McGill would love to have another big night against his former team this week.
The bye week gave Broome a few weeks to prepare for this loaded MVP squad, but I think it’s a tall task to try to bounce back against a team that is rolling right now and I see MVP getting another win on Friday Night.
Crescent @ Chesnee
The Chesnee Eagles found themselves in a hard-fought football game against Liberty. The Eagles were trailing late in the game but were able to punch one in to take a 22-16 lead, which they would go on to win by. The win put the Eagles to 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in region play.
Crescent is coming off a lopsided loss to a strong BHP team last Friday night as they fell 48-21. Cresent so far this year is coming into this game with a 2-4 overall record but they have won 2 out of their last 3 games. Offensively they are averaging around 27 points per game and defensively they are averaging giving up 28 points per game. So they can score a little bit but they are prone to giving up some points.
Chesnee may be playing up in classification for this one but I do think that Chesnee will be in this game with a chance to win it. If they continue to run the football with success and can string together a few stops I can see them winning in a close one.
Landrum @ Liberty
It was a tough week against the Landrum Cardinals last week, they have been on a roll but faced their toughest challenge so far against Clinton last week and unfortunately, they fell 56-22. So the Cardinals will look to have a bounce-back week and get back on the winning track against Liberty this Friday night.
Liberty as mentioned earlier lost to Chesnee 22-16, they had a lead with about 5 minutes to go but couldn’t string together enough stops to hold on. Chesnee found the end zone and Liberty’s offense couldn’t answer so they have fallen to 0-1 inside region play and would like to notch a region win on their record this week.
Landrum had a tough go last week but I don’t think that will linger, I believe they are the better team and should win this one and bounce back and pick up their second win in region play.
