Week 10 Recap

Chapman 49 Broome 28

Sometimes strange things happen on Halloween night. For the Broome Centurions, Thursday night’s opener to week 10 of the high school football season was a continuation of a skid that dates back to their last time playing in Spartanburg’s Viking Stadium – a 28-22 overtime loss to Union. Granted, last week, they would have lost no matter how well they were playing since they were outmatched by Mountain View Prep. But, this week, with a chance to bounce back and get a win over a Chapman team that has struggled all season long, they were shut out in the 2nd half while surrendering Chapman’s season-high in points scored.

The Centurions still had a decent offensive night, accumulating 340 yards of total offense. Jameson Dearybury completed 22 of 28 passes for 179 yards, a TD, and 19 yards on three carries. Brayden Simpson had 9 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown and a 94 yard kickoff return. Ty’Qwon Booker ran the ball 20 times for 142 yards and a touchdown, helping him eclipse the thousand yard mark for the season.

Things don’t get any easier for Broome as they close out the regular season on the road next week at Woodruff, looking to get back in the win column. Chapman’s regular season has wrapped up, so they will await their playoff fate. (Remember – every team in 3A will be in)

Byrnes 27 Boiling Springs 22

This season, despite this being the best team Boiling Springs has put together in a decade or so, there has been one glaringly obvious thing – their offensive line struggles a bit, and their offense is predictable. Both of those things factored into their loss this week, but credit has to be given to Byrnes’ defense all the same.

The Bulldogs came out of the gate and went to their usual MO on offense – Lincoln Huskey chunking deep shot jump balls to Kyle Patterson and Eli Mobley. It worked on their opening series as on the first play from scrimmage, Huskey connected with Patterson for a 60+ yard reception down the left sideline. That set the Dogs up in the red zone, leading to a 2 yard TD run by Javen Chhim 2 plays later.

On the ensuing possession, Byrnes had the perfect answer. All week, there was the possibility being discussed that running back Tre Segarra, who suffered an injury in preseason that was supposed to sideline him for the season, would return sooner than expected. He made his return Friday night and immediately made his presence felt. On the Rebels’ first play from scrimmage, he broke off a 60+ yard run, setting the stage for the first of three touchdowns on the night by him.

Boiling Springs would see another key point in the story play out on their next drive as they made it all the way to the Byrnes 1 yardline, but stalled there, ultimately turning the ball over on downs. Their defense bailed them out by coming up with a safety the next play, but nonetheless, this was a squandered opportunity  – the first of 2 for the Bulldogs. Byrnes fumbled later to give BSHS the ball on the half yardline before Lincoln Huskey fumbled it right back to them at the 1 on 3rd and goal trying to stretch for the goal line. Once again, it was the Bulldog defense that bailed them out afterwards as John Michael Simmons came up with a tip drill pick 6 to give Boiling Springs a 22-21 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

Byrnes drove right down the field and responded again with a touchdown pass from Zy Landrum to Tre Segarra from 6 yards out to make for the final margin. Make no mistake about it.. Boiling Springs had their missed opportunities, but Byrnes’ defense did a great job of getting Lincoln Huskey out of the pocket and forcing him to run or make mistakes such as the pick he threw in the red zone that prevented BSHS from going up 2 scores. They also did not allow the Bulldogs to establish a run game. But, the story of the game was by and large the impact of Tre Segarra, who finished the night with 147 yards on 24 carries with 2 rushing TDs and a receiving score. Not bad for your first game action since August. Welcome back, kid!

Lincoln Huskey finished the game 11 for 21 passing with 201 yards and a touchdown while also adding 42 rushing yards on 11 carries. Patterson logged 112 yards and a score on 3 snags to lead the aerial attack.

Boiling Springs will look to once again bounce back after a loss in a big game as they close out the regular season with the Eastside Eagles next week on the road. This was the regular season finale for the Rebels as they await their playoff fate.

Dorman 35 Eastside 7

The Cavaliers took advantage of being a huge mismatch over Eastside to make a statement with their best offensive output of the season. The Cavs amassed 486 yards of total offense – 305 of which came via the run. Dorman attempted to run the ball 44 times and absolutely dominated behind a 15 carry, 129 yard effort from Nick Means. Enahjay Fowler tallied a pair of rushing touchdowns in his 9 touch, 48 yard night. Through the air, Brice O’Neal was 11 of 16 for 146 yards and a TD.

On the defensive side, they held the Eagles to just 152 yards of total offense with 3 sacks.

The Cavaliers regular season has come to an end, but they are in good position to potentially be in a multi-team tie for the 2 seed in the playoffs, depending on how next week’s showdown between Spartanburg and Gaffney goes.

Speaking of Spartanburg and Gaffney, neither squad had much trouble on the road this week. The Vikings knocked off Riverside 56-20 behind a huge game by Trenton Lynch, who ran for 4 touchdowns and 94 yards on 8 rushes. Chris Sutton also notched a pair of touchdowns, running the ball 12 times for 78 yards. Quarterback Trey Burke went 4 for 7 passing with 93 yards and TD. His leading target was Justin Rice, whose lone catch was a 66 yard score.  Gaffney, despite a scoreless first quarter, turned on the jets in the 2nd, thanks to the return of Jaiden McDowell and a 30 point frame. In the end, the Indians cruised to a 43-0 win to set up the showdown for region 2-5A next week at The Reservation.

Daniel 48 Greer 21

Two teams undefeated in region. One the undefeated consensus number 1 team in the state in the 4A classification. The makings of perhaps an intriguing battle for the region 2-4A crown – and for a little bit, it was. The thing that sealed the deal for the Lions was that they had a couple of stretches of unanswered points – scoring 14 on back to back drives early in the 2nd quarter, and 21 straight on each of their 3rd quarter drives.

Greer still had a good offensive showing, even without starting QB Kaden Rowland, putting up 330 yards of total offense – 257 of which came on the ground. Here’s a familiar tale – Nick Holmes led the way with 24 carries for 169 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Ty Breeze tallied 71 yards and a score on 16 rushing attempts while also logging 73 passing yards on 7 completions.

The Yellow Jackets return home next week to wrap up the regular season against Travelers Rest.

Woodruff 42 Union 15

The Wolverines bounced back from their loss to MVP last week in exactly the fashion you’d expect. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter and never had to worry about even thinking about looking back. They extended the lead to 28-0 before the Yellow Jackets finally cracked the goose egg on the scoreboard at the 7:41 mark of the 3rd quarter on a 30 yard TD pass from Qa Brannon to Josh Rice-Brandon. Union struck again in their next series on a 17 yard TD run by Jakevious Jennings to cut the deficit to 28-12 before surrendering 14 more unanswered to seal the game.

Woodruff QB TJ Morris completed 17 of 23 passes for 193 yards and 4 touchdowns with a pick. Four different receivers hauled in a TD – Kam Taylor (3 catches, 73 yards), Aidem Gibson (4 for 48), Hunter West (3 for 31), and Kori Moates (4 for 20). Aiden Gibson was also the leader in the ground game with 19 carries for 189 yards and a pair of scores.

The Wolverines wrap up the regular season next week as they host Broome while Union hosts MVP in their home finale.

Chesnee 44 Landrum 34

The Eagles locked up a home playoff game by winning the annual battle of the birds. They made the trek up highway 11 to Campobello, and got off to a high-flying start. Their defense forced consecutive three and outs and took a 3-0 lead midway through the opening frame on a 23 yarder from Benji Lazarin. Landrum finally broke through on their final series of the quarter when Ty Foster hit Micah McClintock from 61 yards out, aided by a fake punt converted by Cooper Tidwell. From there, the back and forth was on until the start of the 2nd half – where Chesnee created all the cushion they would need with a 14-0 run to go up 23-13 behind a 54 yard catch and run by Braylon Blanton and a 48 yard rush by Jayden Williams.

The Cardinals pulled back within 3 when Ty Foster once again connected with McClintock, this time from 15 yards out late in the third quarter, but Chesnee responded with another 14-0 run on a pair of TD passes from KJay Proctor to Braylon Blanton – one of 57 yards and the other 26.

The 2 sides traded blows the rest of the way, but in the end, Chesnee was able to recover an onside kick to seal the deal.

Jayden Williams tallied 156 yards and 2 TDs on 10 carries. Braylon Blanton snagged 5 passes for 144 yards and three scores. Kjay Proctor and Evan Reece-Lawter combined for 153 passing yards – Proctor with 83 and a pair of TDs on 2 completions and Lawter with 70 and a score on 4 completions.

On the Landrum side, Ty Foster slung the rock for 237 passing yards with 10 completions. Aiden Kelley led the ground game with 51 yards on 14 touches. Micah McClintock was the top receiver with 7 snags for 126 yards and Aj Medvar had 63 yards on his lone reception for a TD.

Chesnee wraps up the regular season next week with a home region game against Blacksburg while Landrum is on standby awaiting the postseason.
