Spartans Notch First Division One Win For Richter

The USC Upstate Spartans defeated the Western Carolina University Catamounts on Saturday 74-68 in Cullowhee, NC.  The win gave first year Spartans head coach Marty Richter his first Division one win as a head coach.

Upstate found themselves down 6 at the half with star player Mister Dean only playing about 5 minutes in the first half.  Coming out from the halftime break Dean made his presence known with some quick buckets to quickly close the halftime deficit.

With strong performances from Brit Harris with 16 points, Carmelo Adkins with 14 points, Karmani Gregory with 11 points, and Dean with 11 points, Upstate quickly took the lead and never relinquished it.

After the game Coach Richter was happy about the win while also mentioning some issues such as missed free throws that could have come back to bite the Spartans down the stretch.  Coach Richter also mentioned his excitement about the teams progress so far this season, and their much needed week off, from games, that will be coming up this week.

Upstate will take the court again this coming Saturday against instate foe South Carolina at 2:00 at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia. You can hear that game right here on Fox Sports Spartanburg beginning at 1:oo with the Upstate Tailgate.  The Spartans are now 4-8 on the season with three games remaining before Big South Conference play starts on January 2nd.
