Every week after a Spartanburg Viking Football game, I’m going to put my thoughts here on the 3 Biggest things I took away from our game last Friday Night. With that said, here are my thoughts on our Week 0 39-7 loss to Northwestern:
1-This may sound a little strange in an article titled 3 Biggest Takeaways…but for the offense…I don’t have a lot of thoughts on it. Yes, Jr RB Trenton Lynch was amazing once again with 138 yards and a TD on the ground and 82 yards receiving, he’s so incredible with the ball in his hands. I absolutely get why the coaches are going to be creative with him this season. But against an opponent like that with so many new starters…AND you’re starting QB doesn’t play because of an injury (he’ll be back soon), and you play a QB that’s been with your team for just 3 weeks….I think it foolish to have any strong opinions about anything we saw whatsoever. I will say that I thought Soph QB Chris Colin has a lot of things about his game that should make Viking fans happy about his future here.
2- We are YOUNG and it showed. Coach Mark Hodge said last week on his weekly show that his team needs snaps. Our Defense had 4 players who played a Varsity snap last season on it and it was apparent that Northwestern’s offense had way more experience. The amount of times we jumped offsides can’t happen. However, there were a couple of standouts in their first Varsity game…Jr Middle Linebacker Isaiah Lipscomb had 10 tackles, Soph Safety Sentel Hall had 7 tackles and was all over the field, and JP Peake’s sack was a terrific play that led to a turnover. We have a ways to go, but there were flashes to build on.
3-Let’s go back to Chris Colin for a minute. He had a couple of pretty big first game on Varsity mistakes that were obvious. But he showed me two things that I was very impressed with. 1..he has a lot of confidence. His run on a 3rd and 8 where he made a sweet cut after staying in the pocket to let the play develop showed his instincts were on point and 2…he can flat out sling it. What he needs is reps with his teammates…something that’s just going to take time. But the future at QB at SHS looks very promising.
