What a beautiful sight seeing that High School Football season was back in action last week, and we got more action this Friday Night. Lets take a look at the matchup 2A/3A games in our local listening area.
Chesnee @ Broome
Chesnee is coming off a strong win against Pendelton last week by a final score of 35-21. They were up 14-0 but Pendelton tied up the the game in the second half but Chesnee stayed composed and took the lead right back. Pendelton did answer with a a score of their own to tie the game again at 21, but it was Chesnee that closed out the game on a 14-0 run.
Broome had a rough opening to start their season but they did play a very good BHP team and loss by a final score of 49-9. BHP jumped out a massive lead right off the bat as they were up 28-0 after the first quarter and they never looked back.
Chesnee got a strong performance from their quarterback Evan Lawter, who was especially effective using his legs as he rushed for 191 yards and 3 touchdowns. This performance earned him the week 0 player of the week award winner. The Chesnee Eagles would love a repeat performance to help them get a win.
For Broome they must stop the run in this game and force Chesnee to be one dimensional. The Eagles had only 76 yards of passing in their win. If Broome can stuff the run and force Chesnee to have to throw it I think that will give Broome the advantage in this one.
Overall, I feel this will be a good game and just like last year I think it will be a close finish. Broome has a losing streak going and they are desperate to snap it. But it will be no easy task to do so against Chesnee team that has played solid football dating back to region play last season.
Chapman @ St Joseph’s
It was not the opener the Chapman Panthers were hoping for but they did have to play one of the best teams in the state in the Daniel Lions. The Panthers simply just couldn’t get anything going as they fell 43-0. St. Joseph’s opened their season against Cardinals Newman and they started off their season with a 41-29 win.
Last year when these two teams met it was a 35-21 victory for Chapman. The Panthers had tremendous success on the ground against St. Joes rushing for over 395 yards. The Panthers will look to repeat that performance and if they can have success running the ball again that should put them in position to win this game.
I am looking for a bounce back week for the Chapman Panthers and see them winning this game.
MVP @ Southside Christian
MVP opened their season with a big win over Atlantic Collegiate by a final score of 34-0. In the two matchups against Atlantic Collegiate they have outscored them 113-0.
Southside Christian is certainly challenging themselves with their non-region schedule they opened their season against a very good Abbeville football team and the game was one sided as Abbeville would roll to a 42-0 victory. So it certainly doesn’t getting any easier this week playing MVP.
MVP definitively showed last week they may have a lost some key guys but still have plenty of talent and they should get to 2-0 on this week.
Union @ Fairfield Central
Union opened their season against a solid Newberry team and it was the same struggles we seen over the last several seasons as they fell behind big and never could get anything going. They allowed too many big plays and next thing you know it was a running clock as they fell 62-12
Fairfield Central also is coming off a rough opener as they were steam rolled by Ridgeview 40-0. Fairfield Central was only able to total 48 yards off offense, while they gave up over 400 yards.
Both teams are looking to avoid the agony of another defeat and both teams are looking to fix their defensive issues in week 0. That will be the key for this game of what team will can make the adjustments and clean things up. Whoever does that will go on to win this game.
Fountain Inn @ Woodruff
Woodruff right off the bat found themselves in a battle against a strong Clinton team but they once again showed they are up for a fight as they took the Red Devils by a final score of 21-13. More of a defensive struggle this year vs last year where it was an offensive explosion for both teams
Fountain Inn is also coming off a successful week 1 as they beat up on a Liberty team by a final score of 48-14. Fountain Inn was very defensively in this game despite the two scores surrendered as they barely allowed over 100 yards for the game.
They will have their hands full this week however, trying to stop the rushing attack that the Wolverines possess, That has to be the first objective for Fountain Inn if they allow Woodruff to get their run game going it will be a long day for them. I think Woodruff on both sides of the ball will be too much for Fountain Inn and I see them getting the win.
Berea @ Landrum
Landrum flipped the script on Walhalla from a year ago by beating them in week 0 by a final score of 20-13. Offensively they were able to do just enough but defense was strong the entire game, they did give up a late score to shrink their lead to seven but they were able to hang on and get the victory.
Berea had an open week last week and this is the start of their season. A year ago it was Landrum that had their way with the Bulldogs winning 46-6. Landrum was clicking on all cylinders against a team that they should be beating.
Landrum I think again is the stronger team as Berea has struggled many years and I feel like this should be another lopsided victory for the Cardinals.
