Week 2 of the High School Football season is a few days away and this Friday has several exciting matchups. Let’s take a closer look at the matchups from the 2A/3A previews in our local listening area.
Chesnee @ Walhalla
The Chesnee Eagles are coming off a crushing loss to the Broome Centurions 35-34. They trialed by two scores late in the fourth quarter but caught fire and were able to tie the game and force Overtime. In OT Broome scored and the PAT was good, the Eagles on their very first play took to the house and decided to play aggressive and go for the win, Which I love by the way, but they just were not able to execute and were stopped.
Now the Eagles will turn their attention to playing the Walhalla Razorbacks, who have had a rough go so far this season. They were defeated by Landrum in week 0 and they were demolished last week playing Pickens giving up 70 points.
The Eagles despite the lost last week have been playing great football and I can see them bouncing back with a lopsided victory this week. I think they are too balanced for the Razorbacks to handle
Landrum @ Ware Shoals
The Landrum Cardinals are off to a 2-0 start as they did what was expected of them last week against a Berea squad shutting them out 39-0. The Cardinals will have a tougher Challenge this week as they will be on the road taking on Ware Shoals
Ware Shoals is also off to a hot start as well at 2-0 they opened their season against Blacksburg and rolled to a 44-6 victory and they followed that up last week with a win over Ninety-Six 36-28.
For the Cardinals stopping the rushing attack of Ware Shoals has to be the first priority so far this season that has been their bread and butter as they have been able to wear teams down and make some explosive plays. I think this will be tight game but I am going to slightly lean to the home team here to win a tight one.
Union @ York
The Union County Yellow Jackets have continued to struggle as they fell again last week to Fairfield Central 35-0. It was simply another game that they just couldn’t make enough plays to give them any shot to win or to be in the game. So, they will look to get themselves going this week on the road vs York
York so far this season is also 0-2 they fell in their opener to Indian Land 36-6 and then last week they were defeated by Nation Ford 28-14.
York has shown they can have success on the ground as they had over 170 yards rushing last week against Nation Ford, their passing game has yet shown they can put up big numbers in the air, so Union will have to shut down the run game and force them in long passing downs.
Union just needs a spark and perhaps that can come this week but there just has not been any consistency to their game and because of that I am going to lean to Union getting this week
Woodruff @ Emerald
The Woodruff Wolverines just continue to roll as they are 2-0 after their win last week against a solid Fountain Inn squad. This was a little test for them as many know Woodruff is overall the better team but Fountain Inn can create a challenge, but the Wolverines over the course of the game simply wore them down and won 46-27. They will now look to make it three in a row to start this season if they can get the win against Emerald on the road this week.
Emerald is also 2-0 as they opened their season against Ninety-Six and defeating them by a final score of 28-7 and then in week 1 they went on the road and beat Travelers Rest 28-7. Emerald so far has done their damage on the ground and have not establish a passing game, which coul spell trouble for them against Woodruff.
I feel to keep up with the balance offense the Wolverines have they must be able to make some plays down field. I don’t see Emerald keeping up with Woodruff and I see the Wolverines winning big again.
St Joseph’s @ MVP
MVP has started this year 2-0 once again as they dominated last week as they defeated Southside Christian 43-14, and they will look to improve to 3-0 as they will take on St. Joes this week.
St Joes, is coming off a thrilling win over the Chapman Panthers last friday night. Both teams just traded blows and put up a lot of points on offense. With about 2 minutes left the Panthers scored a TD and went for two and St. Joes got the stop and would go on to run out the clock and win the game.
But it gets tougher for St. Joes this week as MVP has been balanced on offense and extremely stingy on defense. I look for MVP to shut down St. Joes and go on to win comfortably.
