Week 2 4A/5A Preview

After two weeks, we are officially in the swing of things for high school football. Last week saw a number of close games, a couple of one-point losses and one that went into overtime, as well as a few of our area teams moving to 2-0 on the season. Here’s a look ahead for Week 2.

Broome @ Spartanburg

The Broome Centurions escaped a late comeback bid last Friday at home against Chesnee. Broome held a 16 point lead with 8 minutes left in the game, and the lead crumbled as the Centurions fumbled the ball to the Eagles who then scored and converted the 2-point attempt with 6 minutes left. With a chance to end the game, Chensee got the three and out and tied the game with 45 seconds to go forcing overtime. Ty’Qwon Booker scored the touchdown for Broome in the extra period, and after Chesnee scored on its first play then went for two and was stuffed, giving the Centurions a 35-34 win.

Booker was named our Player of the Week after running for 219 yards on 21 carries for three touchdowns. Broome will face a much different test this week, going up the road to take on Spartanburg. The Vikings fought hard on the road against Dutch Fork, holding a lead in the first half after big plays by RB Trenton Lynch. The Silver Foxes proved to be too much for the Vikings, outscoring Spartanburg 27-0 after halftime for a 54-21 win. Lynch ripped off 143 rushing yards and two touchdowns including an 86 yard score early in the second quarter.

The game presents the 0-2 Vikings a thus far rare opportunity in 2025 to play a team that did not win a 5A state championship last year, and getting QB Trey Burke back from a preseason injury along with improved defensive play against Dutch Fork should present a great chance to get the teams first win. However, Booker is coming off maybe the best game of his Broome career, and the offense at Broome showed real growth and could be looking to take advantage of Spartanburg’s still inexperienced defensive group.

Chapman @ Boiling Springs

The Boiling Springs Bulldogs are coming off of the surprise result of the week, a 21-14 loss at Mauldin. Last year’s matchup saw Boiling Springs beat Mauldin 31-12, and the Mavericks had won a combined 3 games since the beginning of 2022 before last Friday’s win over the Bulldogs.

Boiling Springs defense secured three interceptions and scored a touchdown, but the offense failed to gain traction. Now at 1-1 on the season, the Bulldogs will matchup with the Chapman Panthers after winning the road matchup in 2024 in a blowout, 52-7.

Chapman went on the road last week to play St. Joseph’s in a game that went to the wire, a 35-34 loss that came down to the last play. The Panthers scored a late touchdown in a game they were mostly trailing, went for the two-point attempt to take the lead and came up short by one, falling to 0-2 this year. WR Keilon Tucker had a monster game, scoring twice on his three catches and going for 146 yards. Senior QB Bryson Cothran went 15-23 through the air for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Chapman will certainly have its work cut out for them this week going on the road against Boiling Springs, but after last week’s loss for the Bulldogs there could be blood in the water the Panthers can take advantage of.

Greenwood @ Dorman

The Dorman Cavaliers are 2-0 after a home win against Catawba Ridge, shutting the Copperheads out for all but the last 7 minutes of the game in a 30-7 win. This week it’s a return to Cavalier Stadium to take on 1-0 Greenwood.

Last week’s win for Dorman was similar to its first in the sense that the Cavaliers again dominated the ground game. Nick Means scored three rushing touchdowns and Isaac Tate scored one as well, and in the end Dorman finished with 252 rushing yards. The Cavalier defense also stood out, keeping the Copperheads in the negative rushing with -28 yards and just 133 yards through the air. Senior Christian Waring picked up two sacks and three tackles for a loss, and the defense as a whole sacked Catawba Ridge five times and got 12 TFLs.

The Greenwood Eagles had a bye in Week 0 then started their season with a 48-8 home win against Beaufort. In the mismatch, Greenwood’s defense surrendered just 52 total yards and South Carolina-bound Triston Lewis notched four total touchdowns early on 11-16 passing. Lewis plays quarterback for the Eagles but is committed as an athlete and possible safety. Backups played nearly the entire second half for Greenwood.

Last year, Dorman went on the road to win this matchup behind a triple-digit rushing game from Means, look for him to be a spearhead of the attack again and the Cavalier defense to be licking its chops for another big night.

Gaffney @ Greenville

The Gaffney Indians got back on the right track this past week with a 28-0 shutout win at home against JL Mann. Gaffney’s defense showed its teeth, holding the Patriots to under 75 yards of passing and rushing in the game and scoring a touchdown on a scoop and score by Kendaris Bailey.

Senior QB Banks Bouton actually led the team in rushing for 91 yards on 8 carries and scoring a touchdown, and RB Josiah Hill found the end zone as well for the Indians. Senior QB Jayvon Gillmore’s biggest pass of the day came on a 51 yard score to Sun’derius Rogers which was the biggest contributor to his 66 passing yards in the game. The Indians will have to clean up the penalties and be better on third down going forward, which were two areas that held back Gaffney from a bigger rout last Friday. Gaffney committed 12 penalties for 90 yards, and were 0-7 on third down.

Greenville really struggled against Dorman in the opener and got shut down by the Cavaliers defense, but bounced back in a major way to blank Riverside in a 28-0 road win last week. Junior Julian Renrick collected three of the Red Raiders five sacks, and Greenville’s defense picked up three more interceptions. Sophomore QB Kiishawn Farrow totaled 229 yards with 129 through the air and 100 on the ground with two rushing touchdowns, both to lead the team.

Greer @ Hillcrest

The Greer Yellow Jackets ran into a buzzsaw last week, giving up 34 unanswered points in the first three quarters against a high-powered Belton Honea Path squad. Greer showed fight, scoring three touchdowns in the last six minutes, but fell on the road 41-19 and are now 0-2 on the year.

The breakout name from this one for Greer is freshman WR Zay Moseley who found the end zone twice in his four grabs for 57 yards. Through two games, Moseley leads the Yellow Jackets in receiving and has become sophomore QB Dawson Fowler’s top target. Senior LB Sammy White led the defense with 12 tackles, and his teammate junior LB Quavon Wilson had a double-digit tackle game as well with 10.

The Hillcrest Rams are 1-1 with a 56-17 home win against Laurens in the opener, followed by a 30-21 road loss to Clover. Junior QB Jackson Free threw for 203 yards and a touchdown, but coughed up two costly interceptions in the loss last week. Greer will have to be careful with senior RB Josh Smith who had a monster game against Laurens.
