Two schools separated by 3 miles were separated on score sheet by a lot more as the Spartanburg Vikings defeated the Broome Centurions by a final score of 50-7. In a game without starting QB Trey Burke in the lineup (practice injury), the Vikings would lead from start to finish
Recap
It did not take long for the Vikings to cut loose after a brutally tough opening two games as Trenton Lynch took the opening handoff 63 yards for a score. This would be a taste of things to come as Lynch ripped through tacklers on his way to the opening score. Broome’s opening possession went away quickly after a big screen pass to Tyqwon Booker was wiped off the board by a holding call. A punt that put the Vikings back at midfield set up Trenton Lynch to strike again, this time coming off a screen pass from 48 yards out.
Staring down a 14-0 deficit, the Centurions would get aggressive at midfield, going for it on their own 44 on 4th and 1 and ultimately came up short. Starting in opposing territory, the Vikings would once again turn to their standout RB Lynch, who would answer the call again from 20 yards out to push the lead to 20 to 0 at the end of the first quarter (the PAT wasn’t converted due to a bad snap).
Now dealing with a three score disadvantage, Broome’s offense was unable to get anything going against the Vikings front 7 and only 8 seconds into the 2nd Quarter, put the ball on the ground where Chance McCree was able to scoop it off the turf and take it into the endzone to pad their lead to 27-0.
Broome would find the score late in the second quarter, as their punt team came up with the recovery of a muffed punt on the Spartanburg 7 yard line. The Centurions would utilize a little misdirection and send Reece Waugerman on his way into the endzone to cut the lead to 27-7.
That would be the closest Broome would get as the rest of the night was all Vikings. A 63 yard pass from Chris Colin to Torrean Davis would pad the lead out to 34-7. The play that would symbolize the whole night in a nutshell happened with 1:39 left in the half as Lynch ripped off another 40 yard run, pushing a big pile with him down toward the endzone, only to have the ball fumbled at the five and recovered at the 1 yard line, setting Lynch up to call his own number from the Wildcat formation and score from a yard out.
A scoreless 3rd brought a running clock and in the fourth quarter, the Vikings would add a safety and 64 yard kick return touchdown by Zeke Bell Boyd to cap off the night.
What’s next
The Broome Centurions, coming off an overtime thriller against Chesnee last week, will look to rebound from this loss that dropped them to 1-2 on the year. In what ultimately felt like a titlewave of misfortune, the Centurions will have a chance to bounce back as they get a matchup next week with the Emerald Vikings, who are also coming off a loss against Woodruff. Playing from behind limited what the Centurions could do, essentially neutralizing the powers of standout RB Tyqwon Booker. Cleaning up some costly penalties will be the biggest key going forward.
The Spartanburg Vikings can rest a little easier this week as the notch win number one on the season. Considering the laundry list of injuries and the tough slate of games to open the season, this bye week couldn’t come at a better time. I don’t really need to cover just how good Trenton Lynch was (155 yards on the ground, 3 rushing touchdowns and 1 receiving) but I do want to single out the defense for the Vikings. In what was a complete performance defensively, Mike Frye and Chance McCree deserve recognition for spending much of the night in the Broome backfield. The Vikings next matchup will be against Eastside on the 19th.
