3 Things Week 2

Every week after a Spartanburg Viking Football game, I’m going to put my thoughts here on the 3 Biggest things I took away from our game last Friday Night.  With that said, here are my thoughts on our Week 2 50-7 win over Broome:

1- It was nice to see it all come together, especially on Defense.  Weeks and Weeks of practice and after an 0-2 start (yes we played the 2 defending 5A state champs) it all came together.  Yes, I also understand we played an opponent we were supposed to beat, but after who we played in the first 2 weeks, it was nice to see our boys put it all together.  Soph LB Chance McCree has had a terrific start to the season and had the scoop and score Friday night.  Several different players like Mike Frye, Tryon Duncan, and Marquez Sanders all had sacks (many more did as well).  There’s still so much unknown with our team but to have a game like this is crucial in my opinion in the development of what we can be especially for a young Defense.  When you work that hard, having some success on the scoreboard can build confidence and we gained some Friday night.

2-We need a bye week fast…good thing it’s now.  The injuries to this Spartanburg team is unlike any other year I’ve seen and we’ve had some difficult ones.  Several players are playing hurt but we have had many of our starters miss games already.  Our starting QB Trey Burke was out for the 2nd game this season with a different injury each time, WR Kendrion Keenon missed his 2nd straight game, OL Esau Aguilar-Romero hasn’t played yet, S Brooks Vaughn is out, and LB Isiah Lipscomb is out. Some players played this week after missing time last week. We also had a few players miss the opening game but are back now.   With Region play in 2 weeks, it’s time to heal up.

3-I thought QB Chris Colin looked a lot more comfortable in his 2nd start.  Yes it’s game 2 for him, Yes it’s not Northwestern..Absolutely.  But Colin looked calm and it showed in the lack of mistakes.  Nothing was forced and his accuracy was on point.  We of course want our starting QB Trey Burke back, but Colin has shown he can lead this offense.  It of course helps to have a RB like Trenton Lynch next to you, who had 8 carries for 155 yards and 3 TDs on the ground and 1 catch for 48 yards and a TD in the 1st half Friday night.  Colin threw for 153 yards and 2 TDs (1 to Lynch and 1 to Torrean Davis) and no turnovers.
