Most of our 5A teams that we cover are off this week, but the 5A/4A weekly preview rolls on with the only game that qualifies for this article. Next week the stakes rise as region play begins in both Region 2-5A and Region 2-4A, but for this Friday it’s one final tune up for the Rebels and the Yellow Jackets.
Byrnes @ Greer
The Byrnes Rebels are coming off of a bye week following a 1-1 start to the season at the new Nixon Field, but now go on the road for the first time in 2025 for a short trip to Dooley Field to take on the Greer Yellow Jackets.
Byrnes lost an incredibly close game two weeks ago against Irmo by a final score of 35-32 where the Rebels suffered from self-made mistakes that cost them. Two missed extra points and a missed two point attempt along with going 3 of 6 converting touchdowns in the red zone ended up being the little things that can add up to a three point loss. WR Chanin Harris made six grabs for 97 yards and a touchdown in the game, and the defensive side of the ball saw Wyquail Moss recover a fumble and make six tackles to lead the team.
Byrnes will have the rest advantage because Greer played Hillcrest last week on the road, falling 55-16 to a Rams squad that will look to compete with Greenwood for Region 1-5A. The Yellow Jackets trailed by just ten points at the half but were subsequently outscored by Hillcrest 42-13 in the second half. A very young Yellow Jackets team was paced by two sophomores on offense, RB Calvin McCoy (21 carries, 148 YDS, 1 TD, 7 catches, 65 YDS) and QB Dawson Fowler (21-41, 200 YDS, 14 carries, 110 YDS, 1 TD).
Greer has struggled with slow starts this season, and will have to avoid this again to be in a position to beat Byrnes for the second straight year. The Rebels, even coming after a loss, still are getting better and looking to leap into region play with a road win.
