The Landrum Cardinals got back in the win column Friday Night with a win over the Asheville Christian Lions by a final score of 63 to 13. On a night where the Cardinals were without RB/LB AJ Lindsey, everything else worked in Landrum’s favor.
It was Military Appreciation night at Landrum and as the Cardinals cascaded down the grandstand steps, each player carried an American Flag on to the field as the ball was delivered to the field by a Military Humvee. The festivities and good feelings carried over to the field of play as the Cardinals Braylen Revis picked up the opening kickoff off the 20 yard line and proceeded down the field to the Lions 2 yard line before he was brought down. RB JP Branyon finished off the drive by punching it in from the 2 at the 11:44 mark in the first quarter.
The Cardinals weren’t done there though, not by a long shot. The opening drive for the Lions ended almost as quickly as it started as DB/WR Ian Patterson intercepted a 3rd down pass attempt and took it back to the 2 yard line. One play later, the Cardinals were up 14. Before 3 minutes had elapsed, the Cardinals held a four touchdown lead, one of which came off a blocked punt. The Cardinals would add one more touchdown before the quarter closed to make 35-0 at the end of the first.
A running clock began at the start of the second quarter and outside of two touchdowns scored late in the 2nd half, this game was never in doubt for Landrum. Multiple Cardinal players had big nights including Braylen Revis who had 3 touchdowns to his credit. He was every bit the player he has been built up to be this season. A true swiss army knife player that Coach Mike Reid could deploy all over the field. JP Branyon, Trey Nesbit, Dallas Collins, Hayden Martindale and Will Green all had complimentary nights on both sides of the ball.
If you want to find a fault in this performance for Landrum, you can look at the penalties that limited their scoring. On more than one instance in this game, the Cardinals would have a touchdown wiped off the board by an unnecessary block in the back or holding call. In big time games down the stretch this season, they will have to avoid those costly calls.
What’s next
The win puts the Landrum Cardinals at 3-1 on the season. Their next matchup will be on the road against West Oak, before returning home to play Blue Ridge on the 26th. As Jordan Ferrell reported earlier in the week, AJ Lindsey is still working through his shoulder injury but the belief is he could return soon after having the game off this week.
