The High School season is already into week 4, as for many of our teams begin region play, some have a couple more final tune-up before they play in the games that truly matter. Let’s take a look at the matchups from the 2A/3A games in our local listening area.
Broome @ Powdersville
Broome struggled last week in their loss against Emerald 42-18. Unfortunately, it was a game that they couldn’t get themselves into as they were behind early, and Emerald was able to control it pretty the entirety of the game.
It doesn’t get easier for Broome, as they take on a solid Powdersville team this Friday night on the road. Powdersville is coming into this game at 3-1 on the season. Their latest win was last Friday night against Pendleton as they won by a final score of 35-7.
Powdersville’s offense has been scoring nearly 35 points per game, so for Broome to win, it will need a strong defensive effort. I think offensively, the Centurions have some pieces that could score points on the board but getting stops and turnovers will go a long way for them.
Christ Church @ Chapman
The Chapman Panthers are coming off a loss against Clinton in overtime. They fought back into the game and forced OT, but on the first play, Clinton scored, and they missed the extra point. Chapman got to the five-yard line with their possession and were not able to punch it in, and lost another heartbreaker.
Christ Church is entering this game at 2-1. They had an open week last week, but two weeks ago they picked up the win against the 5A Riverside Warriors squad in a game that went back and forth, but in the end it was Christ Church that was able to do enough to win the game 37-34.
Chapman easily could be sitting at 2-2 right now instead of 0-4, so they have done many things well, but just have not been able to finish games. I was not surprised to see them in a close one last week, and I expect them to be in this game. Christ Church so far this year has been more consistent on offense, and because of that, I am leaning towards them winning this game.
Chesnee @ Woodruff
The Chesnee Eagles were in a hard-fought battle against RS Central, but Chesnee was able to prevail with a 28-21 victory. But it’s certainly a tough challenge this week for the Eagles, going up against the Woodruff Wolverines.
Woodruff put a beatdown against Woodmont last week, winning 48-6. Both sides of the ball were clicking on all cylinders last week for the Wolverines. But they will have an opponent that will come in ready to go and is tough as nails this week against the Eagles.
I think the story of this game will be the run game for Woodruff vs the run defense of Chesnee. Last week, the Eagles had a hard time stopping the rushing attack against RS Central as they put up over 200 yards on the ground. If they can’t stop the rushing attack led by Aiden Gibson, which is a whole lot easier said than done, but if they can’t, it will be very tough for them to win this game.
Landrum @ West Oak
The Landrum Cardinals played Asheville Christian Academy last Friday night, and this game was over once they kicked off. Landrum opposed their will, and before you could even blink, they were up 35-0 in the first quarter. They would go on to win by a final score 63-13.
West Oak is coming into this game with a 2-2 record, and their last game was two weeks ago, as they had their open week, but they were victorious against Franklin County 34-7.
This is another game where I feel the better team is the Landrum Cardinals; there simply is just a talent gap, and I see the Cardinals rolling to another victory.
Union @ Chester
The Union County Yellow Jackets have been moving in the right direction over the last couple of weeks after a really rough start. They lost a close one-two weeks ago against York, and then they dominated Blacksburg last week, 49-7. Can the Yellow Jackets make it two in a row?
Chester is sitting at 1-3 on the year, and their latest loss was two weeks ago against Saluda 34-14. Looking at the stats they are identical so this is a very even matchup and should be a tight game throughout the entirety.
It could come down to who has better field position and who takes care of the football. If the Union can play defense like they did last week, I think they can win this game.
MVP @ Anderson Cavs
MVP was victorious again last week when they cruised past Crescent by a final score of 41-19. Last year, Crescent actually had the lead against them out of the half but that was not the case this year. MVP was in total control throughout this game.
This week the Stars were supposed to play Cabarrus but that game was dropped and now the Stars will be playing Anderson Cavs. The Cavs are 1-2, winning their last game 46-14 against Andrew.
This is another game where the MVP squad is more talented than and should have no problem winning big, so I expect them to stay unbeatean.
