3 Things Week 4

Every week after a Spartanburg Viking Football game, I’m going to put my thoughts here on the 3 Biggest things I took away from our game last Friday Night.  With that said, here are my thoughts on our Week 4 48-34 win over Eastside:

1-Let’s get this out there to start…that is a much better Eastside team than we saw last year.  Their offense did a terrific job blocking on the perimeter and their RB Lucas Tankersley was outstanding at getting to the edge and cutting it up field in stride.  I was very impressed with their 1^st half performance.  On defense, we have to get better at tackling in space. We had way too many shoulder tackles and didn’t wrap up well.  Yes, we are ABSOLUTELY a young defense and there are many that continue to impress, but with Gaffney coming up…a big physical team who wants to run, we have to tackle better.  Big shout though to CB Christian Davis who did a terrific job getting off his blocks and recording 10 tackles and 2 INTs in the win. LB Carter Waugh had 10 tackles and S R.J Estrich had 12.

2-QB Trey Burke had his best game in a Viking uniform.  22 of 26 for 266 yards and 3 TDs with 0 INTs.  Burke’s accuracy down the field mixed with his arm strength has become a real weapon for this offense.  He spreads it around incredibly well but he and Sr WR Zeke Bell Boyd were in rhythm last Friday night.  Zeke had a career high 10 catches for 92 yards.  He now has 19 receptions on the season through 4 games.  This was just Burke’s 2^nd game of the year, as he’s dealt with 2 different injuries.  He’ll need to have a similar performance this week against a very good Gaffney Defense.

3-Trenton Lynch – yep he did it again.  18 carries for 208 yards and 3 TDs along with 4 catches for 65 yards and 2 more TDs…Lynch saved Spartanburg Friday night.  The 1^st half was a disaster..WAY TOO MANY penalties (15 total for the game) and Lynch had 2 huge scoring plays to keep the game within 4 at half.  The 2^nd half was much better all around by the offense, but when the Vikings needed Lynch early, he delivered again.  When this kid gets any space at all…look out.  The offense as a whole was really solid minus the penalties…which better be cleaned up going forward or we’ll have some problems.
