It’s already week 5 of high school football season, and many teams have begun region play; others are in their final tune-up before region play begins. Let’s take a look at the matchups in our local listening area.
Broome @ Blacksburg
The Broome Centurions, without question, were the story last week as they went down to Powdersville and got the win. Their offense was automatic. They were led by Jameson Dearybury, who completed 25 out of 29 passes for 372 yards and 3 touchdowns and added 15 yards on the ground.
Blacksburg is 0-5 on the season and was crushed again last week by Central, falling 40-6. Blacksburg has given up at least 40 points in 4 out of the 5 games this year.
Broome looked great last week, and they have a very favorable matchup here this week. I look for the Centurions to win in blowout fashion.
BHP @ Chapman
The Chapman Panthers are now 0-6 after falling to Christ Church 48-20 last week. After an inspiring effort against Clinton the week before, I felt like the Panthers would push through and get into the win column , but they fell behind early, and the hole was way too big to overcome.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Panthers this week as they take on a loaded BHP team that is 5-0 this season. Their latest victory was a 49-0 victory over Palmetto. BHP games have not been close; they are outscoring their opponents 225-44 this year. So they can get it done on both sides of the ball.
This is a tough matchup for the Panthers, and really, it would just be a tough matchup for anybody. I see this game being one-sided in favor of BHP.
Clinton @ Union
Union put up a great effort offensively last week, as they scored 36 points on offense against Chester. The bad news is they allowed 55 points, and they just couldn’t get stops to give themselves a chance.
Clinton fell last week but played a very competitive game against the Daniel Lions as they fell 41-33. Clinton is 2-3 coming into this game. I feel they aren’t as deep as they were the last couple of years, but they are still very solid.
I think in this game, Union defense continues to struggle and constantly gives up big plays. For them to have a shot in this game, the defense needs to step up, and I am not sure if they can do it, so I see Clinton winning this game.
Woodruff @ Wren
The Woodruff Wolverins remained unbeaten after beating a tough Chesnee team last week by a final score of 52-17. The Wolverines rushed the ball down the throats of the Eagles, rushing for 366 yards in the win. Aiden Gibson had 156 of those rushing yards on just 15 carries.
Wren is 2-2 on the season and has dropped their last two games. Their latest loss came to a good TL Hanna team, 40-27. Wren has played some tough teams this season, and this week will be no different, squaring off against the Wolverines.
I think this game will be a close one, and I see both teams going back and forth with big plays, and I think it will come down to the defenses, who will be able to make the key stops or come away with the key turnover, will win this one.
Landrum @ Blue Ridge
The Landrum Cardinals did not have a great game last week against West Oak, which was a bit of a surprise, as the consensus was that the Cardinals were going to roll to a victory.
They found themselves down 29-0 and then finally put in two touchdowns and converted two two-point conversions to cut it to 29-16, but West Oak found the endzone again and ended the game.
Now, Landrum will play the Blue Ridge Tigers, who are coming off a thrilling come-from-behind win over their region foe, Pickens, 50-43. They were down 15 with little over 8 minutes to play, and the Tigers scored 22 unanswered points to win it.
The Tigers are coming into this game with a lot of confidence as they are off to a 3-1 start to begin their seaosn the Cardinals are coming into this one with a bad taste in their mouth and I do expect a much better effort this week from them, but the Tigers have been playing solid and I am going with them to win this one over the Cardinals.
