Every week after a Spartanburg Viking Football game, I’m going to put my thoughts here on the 3 Biggest things I took away from our game last Friday Night. With that said, here are my thoughts on our Week 5 28-21 loss to Gaffney.
1-Let’s start with a positive. I could take this time to again talk about Trenton Lynch and his 189 yards, 1 TD and 6 catches. But I want to point out how good the run blocking has been this season. LT Jaylin Rice, LG Brendon Carson, C Justin Sims, RG Ligon Martin and RT Jordan Thomas have done a really good job giving Lynch some running room. If Lynch gets anything at all, he makes magic happen. His yard totals this season per game have been 138, 143, 155, 208, and 189. Also big shoutout to Keyvion Ferguson – he had 5 catches for 46 yards and 2 TDs.
2-For 3 quarters, our Defense did a terrific job. Held Gaffney to 7 points a little over 100 yards rushing. Then in the 4th quarter, Gaffney stopped throwing the ball…which at that point they were 5 of 16 passing for 60 yards and 1 INT. That’s where they finished for the night. But in the 4th, our Defense got pushed around and missed way too many tackles. We have to clean that up as we’ve struggled the last week with our tackling in space. We made a ton of plays in the backfield, but have to be better on the edge.
3-I really like this team. Our kids fight hard and represent our school well. I’m using takeaway #3 here to encourage Viking fans to come out next Friday when we host Dorman on Oct. 10th. If you haven’t been to a game in a while, I hope you can come out next week. This team fights incredibly hard and plays with a ton of passion and plays the right way.
