Every week after a Spartanburg Viking Football game, I’m going to put my thoughts here on the 3 Biggest things I took away from our game last Friday Night. With that said, here are my thoughts on our Week 6 52-0 win over Wade Hampton
1-I know I know…Wade Hampton hasn’t won a game in 2 years so I’ve thought long and hard here about what to actually takeaway from this game. I pointed out during the broadcast that this was a great week to work on what needed the most improvement because the next 3 weeks in terms of schedule is very tough with Dorman, at Boiling Springs and at Byrnes. What I wanted to see first and foremost in our game last Friday was an improvement in tackling beyond the line of scrimmage. I thought in the 1st half we did that very well. LBs Jaylin Mathis and Chance McCree were very quick to the ball and the form in our tackling was improved. Getting multiple players to the football outside the tackle box will be crucial the next few weeks and we were better at that on Friday.
2-QB Trey Burke missed 2 games this season and just hasn’t had much time to have a game to get working on some rhythm. He certainly found some Friday night. 4 TD passes to 4 different WRs while 6 different players caught passes. Burke threw to all parts of the field well and was better at looking off other defenders. There’s no doubt with missing 2 games, the pressure was there to get going, well he certainly did so Friday night and hopefully that will carry over this week to the Dorman game.
3-Penalties continue to be an issue especially on Offense. The Vikings had 14 penalties for 178 yards…think about that. That’s almost 2 full football fields. It was much better against Gaffney but on offense, we just kill drives with so many Big penalties. That has to be cleaned up obviously going forward.
