Region play is in full swing as teams are trying to set themselves up for a region title or simply just a playoff spot. Last week was not the most exciting week in how the games played out, but this week has a ton of potential to be an exciting week. Let’s take a look at the matchups from the 2A/3A games in our local listening area.
Clinton @ Chesnee
The Chesnee Eagles are coming off their first region game of the season last week, as they got off on the right foot by winning by a final score of 48-19. The Eagles took care of business against a struggling team. They were up big early and cruised to the win, but this week will be a challenge against Clinton.
Clinton has played several teams in our area so far, and they have shown they are still a really solid football program. I do feel they aren’t quite what they have been, but they are still a tough matchup for anyone. They defeated Liberty last week in the region opener by a final score of 49-6.
For Chesnee, stopping the run is the priority. If they are going to win this game, they will have to limit Clinton’s run game and win the time of possession. If Chesnee can sustain long scoring drives and keep Clinton off the field, they can pull out this win, but I am leaning towards Clinton getting the win.
Broome @ Union
What a wild game this was last year. It appeared that Broome was going to get the win and was up multiple scores with very little time remaining, but Union pulled a rabbit out of their hat and stunned the Centurions to win the game.
Union had its region opener last week against MVP, and it was a long night for them as MVP simply had its way and Union was on the wrong side of the scoreboard as the final was 66-14. Union has given up 124 points within the last two games, so they will look to figure out this week against Broome.
Broome also began region play with a loss as they took on the Woodruff Wolverines and lost by a final score of 49-14. The Centurions were on a roll before this game, so they will look to bounce back and get back on the winning track.
I think Union defense is a work in progress, and I think Broome’s offense will be able to put up too many points, and I don’t see them giving the lead late like last year.
Chapman @ MVP
MVP, as mentioned, rolled to their victory last week against Union 66-14. They were clicking on both sides of the ball and just made one explosive play after another. So they will look to go to 2-0 in the region against Chapman.
It’s been a tough year for the Chapman Panthers as they are 0-6 in their non-region matchup, but they are looking to turn it around in region play and push for the playoffs.
Right now, the Panthers have just been too inconsistent on both sides of the ball while MVP is rolling and they seem to be getting better each week, so I look for MVP to get the win.
Blacksburg @ Landrum
Landrum is coming off their bye week and playing in their first non-region game. Their last game was a rough one as they fell to Blue Ridge by a final score of 63-28 where they were outscored 35-0 in the second half. The Cardinals are looking to snap their two-game losing streak.
Blacksburg, as mentioned, was crushed last week by a strong Chesnee squad 48-19, and they have just really struggled, giving up 40-plus each week. I think Blacksburg is exactly what the doctor ordered for the struggling Cardinals. I see them bouncing back and winning this game fairly easily.
