Every week after a Spartanburg Viking Football game, I’m going to put my thoughts here on the 3 Biggest things I took away from our game last Friday Night. With that said, here are my thoughts on our Week 7 33-30 win over Dorman.
1-I want to make sure as Viking fans we all do one thing – we don’t take for granted just how special what we saw was from our Kicker Will Love. High School Kickers don’t regularly kick 50+ yarders, High School Kickers don’t regularly boom touchbacks in the back of the endzone, High School Kickers don’t regularly have punts over 50 yards. Will Love does these things on a regular basis…so to step up and boom a perfect 51 yard FG as time expired, it would be easy for all of us to just say “Yep, that’s our guy.” I want to make sure we don’t just say that’s what we expect. I want everyone to realize how incredible this young man is and don’t just expect it because he’s that’s good. I don’t have every kick recorded in my head of ours, but it’s safe to say that both Will and John Love have 2 of the most famous kicks in school history. John’s game winner over Byrnes in 2021 and Will’s over Dorman Friday night. Will is that special…I’ve never seen a Kicker like him. This Kick…this 51 yard game winner…in this game against this team…it’s in my opinion, the best Kick I’ve ever seen.
2-RB Trenton Lynch did it again. There’s nothing more I can say about this young man that hasn’t been said. 28 carries, 176 yards and 4 TDs on the ground, plus 3 catches for 56 yards. I’ve said repeatedly he’s the best RB in the state…in a state with some amazing RBs. Lynch did this against one of if not the best defense we’ll see this season in Dorman. The best run of them all may have been the 20+ yarder to set Will Love up. I’d like to add in here how good QB Trey Burke was. 11 of 20 for 217 but it’s not about stats. Trey stretched the field with multiple throws of over 19 yards and a couple over 30. It wasn’t screens that went for big plays, it was downfield perfect throws and a big shoutout to Torrean Davis who had a career high 102 yards on 4 catches.
3-Our run defense has received some criticism lately and I get it…Eastside and Gaffney ran on us well. But our boys stepped up big time against Dorman. Nick Means finished the night with 20 carries for 98 yards and had just 8 carries for 9 yards in the 1st half. Means is a very talented RB for the Cavaliers. We had many run stops for 3 yards or less in this game. Dorman certainly broke a few, but I was very impressed with several of our guys up front including DE Tryon Duncan and LB Jaylin Mathis. So many guys up front got off blocks very well and made huge hits around the line of scrimmage. The most impressive defensive moment of the year was when Dorman started on the Viking 13 yard line, and we got a 3 and out to hold them to a FG. We don’t win without that stop.
