Week 8 2A/3A Preview

Week 8 of the high school football season is just a few days away, and the schedule is packed with big region games where teams are trying to put themselves in playoff position and some are trying to secure themselves a region title. Let’s take a look at the matchups in the 2A/3A ranks in our local listening area.

Union @ Chapman

This is an important game for both teams, as they are trying to make a push for the playoffs. Both teams are winless in the region, and Chapman is still looking to win its first game of the year.

Last week, the Chapman Panthers faced the loaded MVP squad, and it didn’t go well for the Panthers as they were crushed by a final score of 50-7. Union played Broome, whom they shocked a year ago, but that was not the case this year, as they were shut out 42-0.

Both teams are struggling, and I think they will be able to move the ball and put up some points. I know the Panthers have not won yet this year, but there are too many issues on Union’s defense right now, and because of that, I think the Panthers get a win in a close one.

Chesnee @ Liberty

Chesnee had a rough go of it last week as they played a very solid Clinton squad and lost by a final score of 50-29. They fell into a big hole early, and they tried to chip away at it, but Clinton is too good to give that big of a lead, and now the Eagles will look to bounce back against Liberty.

Liberty is coming off its bye week, and it enters this game 4-3 on the year and is 0-1 in the region, as it also lost to Clinton a few weeks back. So both teams are hungry for that first region win.

I feel for Chesnee, stopping the run is always going to be their first objective if they do that and get stops, their offense has more than enough to get it done. I think this game should be close, but I like the Eagles to make enough plays and win this one.

Landrum @ Clinton

The Landrum Cardinals have been struggling and have had a few losses that many of whom came into the game, figured they would roll to victory, and one of those games was last week as they took on Blacksburg, who came into the game winless. Blacksburg’s defense really gave nothing for Landrum to work with and beat them 14-6.

Clinton has been humming right along with key wins in their region already, and is looking to go 3-0 in the region and put themselves in a prime position to secure the region title. As mentioned before, they beat Chensee by a final score of 50-29 so both sides of the ball have been dialed in.

Clinton is rolling right now, and Landrum is struggling mightily, and I see that trend continuing as I look for this Clinton squad to win by a big margin.

MVP @ Woodruff

I can’t lie, this is one game that I have been waiting on all year! I think there are just two really good football teams that will be battling out for the region title, and it appears the winner of this should win this region.  Last year, it was the MVP that got the win, but the only team that gave this MVP squad in the region a competitive game was Woodruff.

Woodruff should be fresh and ready to go after having their bye week, a week ago. The previous week, they took care of business in their region opener, beating Broome 49-14. This was bouncing back after their first loss of the season.

MVP is already 2-0 inside the region with wins against Union and Chapman, who they beat 50-7 last week. MVP really hasn’t been challenged this year, but I feel like they will be in this game, and how they respond will be interesting to see.

This game will be tight, and I think it will come down to the wire. My gut all year is who I am going with, and I think Woodruff will squeak out the win.
