3 Things Week 9

Every week after a Spartanburg Viking Football game, I’m going to put my thoughts here on the 3 Biggest things I took away from our game last Friday Night.  With that said, here are my thoughts on our Week 9 42-7 loss to Byrnes.

1-The Injury Bug is Alive and Well on the East side.  Holy cow…I have never seen a team have so many injuries to starters, especially on one side of the ball.  I’m not saying we played a good game…don’t misunderstand me.  But if you claim to understand sports, then you can NOT ignore how many starters are out on the Defensive side of the football. From even before the season began, to during the game Friday night, it’s crazy how many serious injuries we have suffered.  I’m very proud of our guys for fighting for 4 quarters and making some big stops.  Hopefully, we can get a couple back this week.

2-Before we get to our RB, I want to acknowledge Byrnes RB Tre Segarra.  I’ve seen Tre have long runs before…he’s been doing that since 2023.  What impressed me the most with him was how he used angles to get more yards on particular runs.  It’s one thing to run through a gigantic hole up the middle…it’s another to create yards when you don’t have the space.  He did very well at that last Friday night.  I love seeing great players continue to get better and better.  Congrats to Tre on a great season so far and good luck to you young man the rest of the year and so on.  Tip of the Cap.

3-I had one Viking fan text me during the game that said we’ve been spoiled with watching the Great Trenton Lynch for the last 2 and a half seasons.   Man he’s so good and make no mistake, his absence mattered last Friday.  We clearly were not the same team without him and here’s to hoping he can get back this season.   On top of that…we have to play better.  I get what Byrnes did with their pass defense…just sat back and covered up space and we struggled to find room down the middle where we’ve been so successful this season. But there were some plays there to be made and we have to play with more urgency and purpose. Let me make this VERY CLEAR.  I BELIEVE IN THIS TEAM AND OUR PLAYERS AND COACHES!!   But our execution must be better.  We have to win anyway and the players on the field must step into new roles.  If we have to throw it more, then let’s complete more passes.  The players running the ball have to run with more purpose.  The blocking has to block well no matter who is running or throwing it.   All I’m saying is we need to execute if we don’t want our season to end in early November.  I FULLY believe in this team and that we CAN DO IT.  I like our players a lot on both sides of the ball and I fully believe we will play better starting this Friday Night on Senior Night.
