The end of the regular season for High School Football is already here. It just feels like we just got started, but that is how football goes, and it always seems to come and go. There are still some things to be decided in the regions across the upstate, let’s look at the matchups in our local listening area.
Broome @ Chapman
The Broome Centurions had a tough matchup last week as they took on an MVP team that was looking to bounce back after they took their first regular-season loss in school history against the Wolverines the previous week. MVP just completely overwhelmed the Centurions by a final score of 55-12.
Chapman also had a tough matchup going against the first-place Woodruff Wolverines, and they were also outmatched as they fell 31-10. The game appeared closer than it was, but the Wolverines were in complete control of the game.
Both teams have their struggles, but I think Broome has shown to be a little more consistent in their performances as of late. For Chapman to be successful, they will have to be able to run the football well, and for Broome If they can get off to a fast start and make Chapman feel they are out of it then they should cruise to win. But if they allow Chapman to hang around it could get interesting.
Landrum @ Chesnee
This is an important game for both teams as both have had their struggles in recent weeks. Landrum was dominated by a solid Liberty squad 40-15 and fell to 0-3 in their region. For the playoff bid, they need to win, and because of tie breaker scenarios, they need to win by 15 or more points to make it. At least that is what Joe Skinner has told me, so if that’s wrong, blame Joe! Call in the shows and blame him!
Chesnee has also been struggling, as mentioned, as they fell last week to a Crescent that is a 3A school, 45-36. They went back and forth with them, but a killer turnover late, and that simply squashed their momentum, and it got away from them.
In this game, I think Chesnee will be able to move the ball. Landrum’s defense has not shown me that they can keep the opponent out of the endzone, and I often see the opposition with a lot of room to work with. I look for Chesnee to bounce back and get the win.
Woodruff @ Union
The Woodruff Wolverines are trying to lock up a region title and could do that with a win over the Union County Yellow Jackets. Woodruff remained unbeaten in the region, taking care of business against the Chapman Panthers 31-10 last week. They will look to stay hot and get themselves ready for a playoff run.
Union is coming off a bye week and is searching for its first region win. No matter what, Union will be in the playoffs as everyone in 3A is in, but you know they want to try to knock off one of the best teams in the classification and give them huge momentum as they enter the postseason.
I mean, I know I am stating the obvious here, but Woodruff is the better team, and I see no problems for them winning this game and perhaps getting their stars out early to make sure they are healthy and ready to go for the playoffs.
