Dorman 49 Eastside 12
While the score would make you question why this game was worth using as the lead this week, the result was significant for seeding and Dorman’s program. With their shutout win over Gaffney last week, the Cavaliers entered this week’s regular season finale needing simply to win in order to clinch the region 2-5A championship. 2025 South Carolina Mr. Football finalist Kentavion Anderson.
By the time the clock hit triple zeros, Kentavion Anderson and his teammates had managed to take care of business in order to claim Dorman’s first region title since 2020, which secured them the number 2 overall seed in the 5A division 1 playoffs – meaning they will get a first round bye to await the winner of the 7 seed vs 10 seed matchup next week.
The Cavs scored 21 points in both the first and 2nd quarters to more than salt away the Eagles. The “three headed monster” that is running backs Nick Means, Isaac Tate, and Carter Nash each had touchdown runs (Means scored 2). Dorman amassed 412 yards of total offense – shockingly with 223 of them coming in the passing game. Meek Slydell went 12 for 15 through the air with 206 yards and three touchdowns. Corey Cole hauled in 4 passes for 98 yards and a pair of TDs while Daishon Watkins-Hymes made 2 snags for 49 yards and a score. Tate led the ground game with 92 yards and a touchdown on 7 carries. Means tallied 58 and 2 scores on 7 rushing attempts.
Broome 36 Chapman 33
The Centurions came into the finale with a question mark on offense. Last week against MVP, senior quarterback Jameson Dearybury broke his right arm, requiring him to have season-ending surgery on Saturday. With their original backup quarterback also injured, it forced wide receiver Brayden Simpson into the role. Meaning that any success they have on the offensive side of the ball in their quest to beat Chapman on the road and secure a home playoff game would have to come in the form of a big night from Ty’Qwon Booker.
Chapman was able to keep this game competitive, but by the final whistle, it was indeed Booker that made the difference for Broome. The Centurions put up 510 yards of total offense –361 of which came in the run game. Booker toted the rock 33 times for 286 yards and 3 touchdowns – also adding three 2-point conversions. Brayden Simpson completed 11 of 12 passes for 149 yards and a pair of scores to go with his 39 yards on 5 rushes. Asher Littlejohn led the aerial attack with 2 catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. Reece Waugerman also had a receiving score as part of a 7 catch, 40 yard night while rushing 3 times for 36 yards.
Freshman Ashton Moore was a storyline for the Panthers. The young quarterback, who has been senior Bryson Cothran’s backup all year, was 12 of 18 passing for 168 yards and a touchdown. Keilon Tucker was the recipient of that lone passing TD, hauling in 7 balls for 91 yards. Jasiah Copeland was Chapman’s rushing leader with 19 touches for 113 yards and 2 scores.
Broome will unofficially host the Pendleton Bulldogs next week in the first round of the 3A upperstate playoffs while Chapman is projected to go to Southside Christian.
Spartanburg 20 Riverside 19
It’s about to be November – a month in which Netflix will soon release season 5 of the show “Stranger Things.”
That show features a parallel universe in it called the “Upside Down.” And the Vikings’ senior night/Halloween night win over Riverside could be described as just that – stranger things happened and it felt like it was something straight out of a parallel universe.
After recovering a game-opening onside kick by the Warriors – something Riverside apparently likes to do – the Vikes went right down the field, drawing first blood on an 8-yard touchdown run by quarterback Trey Burke. The point after was blocked – by a guy that was so offsides that he was in Viking Kicker Will Love’s face as soon as the ball was snapped. That set the tone for a game in which the Vikings would not crack the scoreboard again until the waning seconds of the 3rd quarter.
In the interim, Riverside quarterback Gideon Merhib proved to be extra elusive. If you were to try and describe his runs, Lee Corso comes to mind – “It’s like trying to catch a greased pig.” Merhib ran for 156 yards and a touchdown on 26 attempts. He was also 15 for 29 passing for 221 yards. Merhib was complemented by his running back Keyon Knowles, who accumulated 133 yards on 13 touches. Riverside actually outgained Spartanburg in the game 531-349.
The Warriors claimed a late 19-14 lead thanks to Spartanburg having three touchdowns called back and fumbling the ball just as many times in the redzone. But, the Vikings finally broke through with about 2 minutes to play in the game when Trey Burke, who was 15 for 21 through the air with 2 touchdowns and an interception, connected with Rock Ferguson (2 catches for 33 yards) from 9 yards out.
Riverside drove right down the field quickly with a chance at a potential game-winning field goal. However, in the end the Warriors rushed their kicking unit on as the play clock was running down to try a 31 yarder, missing it to allow the Vikings to knee the clock out.
Ruben Landrum was the biggest story for Spartanburg with a breakout type of game filling the shoes of Trenton Lynch. He tallied 178 yards on 21 carries to lead the way for the Viking offense.
With the win, Spartanburg unofficially secured either the 5 or 6 seed. Either way the RPI shakes out, the Vikings will be at home for round one next week, likely facing the JL Mann Patriots with the winner possibly facing Dorman in round 2.
Chesnee 64 Landrum 24
Landrum entered the night in a precarious situation. They needed to win this game by 15 points. No matter how many they gave up, they had to be up 15 by the time the clock hit triple-oughts to make the playoffs.
Unfortunately, that did not end up happening. The Cardinals and Eagles’ annual Highway 11 rivalry tussle was back and forth in the early going, but Chesnee eventually pulled ahead midway through the 2nd quarter thanks to 21 unanswered – capped by Braylon Blanton pick 6 that made for an 18-point halftime advantage.
The Eagles ran the ball well all game, and really poured it on in the 2nd half. The Cardinals did not find paydirt again until garbage time with an AJ Lindsey passing TD to Braylon Revis that snapped a 49-0 run and made for the final margin.
Chesnee quarterback Evan Reece-Lawter ran the ball 8 times for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kale Thrift 1-upped him with 3 scores despite adding 12 less yards on 9 touches. Brymier Miller and Keyden Platt also had a TD each on the ground with Miller putting up 78 more yards on 5 rushes.
Landrum was led by Ty Foster with 95 yards and a touchdown on 8 carries. Revis added 84 yards on the ground with a score on 21 attempts. Lindsey was 10 for 22 passing with 89 yards and a touchdown, while only rushing for 4 yards and a TD on his lone touch.
With this one in the rearview, the Eagles will (unofficially) head to Fairfield Central for the first round – which seems like a tradition of late.
Byrnes 42 Boiling Springs 14
Back to back weeks, the rebels have faced an opponent that is so beat up that to say it is pitiful would be an understatement.
Unsurprisingly, in the same circumstances, they did the same thing as they did a week ago, scoring a bunch of points in a short span to put the game out of reach.
Byrnes scored 21 points in less than a minute of game time in the early 2nd quarter to take a 7-0 lead and make it 28-0 before the Bulldogs had a chance to process what was going on and the Rebels cruised to the win.
Byrnes QB Caine Rogers went 11 for 16 with 177 yards and a touchdown. Tre Segarra was both his leading receiver and rusher – amassing 89 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground on 14 carries and hauling in 2 passes for 103 and another TD.
Boiling Springs was led by Josh Kahl, who came in for the benched Imri Logan and completed 10 of 16 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. Jaiden Grate and Tre’Sean Suber combined for 66 yards on 5 catches with Suber notching the Bulldogs’ lone passing TD of the game. Imri Logan led the ground game with 5 carries for just 28 yards, but it was Taron Owen that had their only rushing score to highlight his 8 touches for 23 yards.
Unofficially, the Dogs will rematch with Mauldin, who they lost to 21-14 back on week 1. The Rebs will be on a bye awaiting the winner of the 5-12 matchup.
Elsewhere in 5A, Gaffney blanked Wade Hampton 39-0. The Indians are projected to face Eastside in round one this coming Friday.
Daniel 33 Greer 7
The Yellow Jackets finished out the regular season with another tough test against one of the teams at the top of the top-heavy region 2-4A in the Daniel Lions. After the Lions drew first blood, Greer managed to even things out with a 75 yard touchdown run by Calvin McCoy, but that would be their only points of the night and Daniel scored the next 26 unanswered.
McCoy led the way with 19 carries for 146 yards to go with the TD. Quarterback Xavier Sammet went 10 for 27 passing with 177 yards. His leading target was Zay Moseley with 3 catches for 97 yards.
Unofficially, the Yellow Jackets’ playoff run will begin with a road trip to take on the Fountain Inn Fury next week.
Two more in the 3A ranks:
Mountain View Prep was on bye this week. They will host St Joe’s in round 1 next week at a site to be determined.
Woodruff, with region 3-3A clinched already, had no trouble on the road at Union, knocking off the Jackets 43-6. The Wolverines will be the #2 overall seed and host the 15 seed in the opening round. Union will still be in the playoffs, set to take a road trip to Crescent.
